I am angry I wish I were dead// Eu estou com raiva, eu desejo morrer

Sometimes we get disappointed in God, right? Just because He doesn’t do what we expected. Or like Jonah from the Bible. Jonah knew that God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relenting from disaster (Jonah 4:2). So, having that in mind, he knew that if he obeyed God going to Nineveh to prophecy their doom, and if the people repented afraid of the destruction, God wouldn’t destroy them. It made Jonah very angry. In Jonah's sense of Justice, those people deserved to be destroyed because they were violent people. So Jonah did disobeyed God and run away from God’s word and ended up inside a fish’s belly. He repented and God gave him a second chance to make things right. He went to Nineveh and prophesied against the people, the people repented and God withheld the destruction.

So Jonah was so angry that he wanted to die. He was very disappointed in God. But God showed him how unfair Jonah’s thoughts were. God made a tree grow in a night to give Jonah a shade, and the next night God appointed a worm to attack the plant and it withered. Jonah pitied the plant and his sorrow made him want to die.

God asked him, “Do you do well to be angry?” he answered, “Yes, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die” (a bit dramatic this Jonah). Then the LORD said, “You pity that plant for which you did not labor, nor did you made it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night. And should I not pity Nineveh with more than 120 thousand people who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle? (Jonah 4:9-11).

So we don’t know God’s plan for others nor for ourselves. We think we know justice. But think about it. Where the sense of justice come from? Who gave you this sense of justice? Who told you what is right or wrong? Did you come up with it by yourself? I don’t think so.

God put some sense of justice in us. We know what is wrong or right especially when we fear the consequences when we fear God. But do you know God as Jonah did? God knows what is best. He is just, besides being gracious, merciful. What side of God would rather see? I know life from our point of view isn’t fair. We say “ life isn’t fair”, and not always a field filled with roses. There are times when all seems dark and lonely. But believe me, He sees everything. He is always teaching us something. Are we paying attention? Or are we like Nineveh’s people who didn’t know their right hand from their left?

Are we only looking from our perspective? God sees all. There are times that we think we are correct and being just from our point of view, but the other one thinks the same. So, who is correct? I suggest that we should trust in God’s judgment because He sees all. Obviously, there are times when it seems that no justice at all was made, nor even from God. I tell you what, wait and see. It may seem there wasn’t any justice in this life, but there will be justice in the end. Sometimes we think we can get away with anything, like an inoffensive “little white lie”. Maybe we think we really did get away with that. But God sees all. Solomon once said, “For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14).

And I am only talking about anger here. Let’s see what Jesus has to say about anger. “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council, and whoever says “you fool” will be liable to the hell of fire” (Matthew 5:22).

Let’s make a mental check checklist. How many times we said or thought evil about someone else? Or How many times did we wish someone’s death or maybe a bunch of people altogether? Exactly in the previous verse (Matthew 5:21) Jesus began remembering his listeners the part of the Law that said “You shall not murder” and right after he talked about anger. What does it say to you? To God, sin is sin, and anger is the same as murder. Let’s be real here. We are all condemned to the hell of fire. Only that is enough to send us to hell literally. We alone don’t deserve mercy, we don1t know justice, especially God’s justice, who sees all, and nothing is hidden from him, nor even our thoughts. Jonah wished for the death of all Nineveh people because they were violent and something more. Yet God gave them a chance to repent and avoid the destruction.

Luckily for us, as I stated earlier at the beginning God is gracious, merciful, slow to anger (unlike us), and abounding in steadfast love, meaning we still stand a chance if we abandon this practice and repent so His mercy and His grace can reach us.

But remember, God, forgives us if you believe that Jesus came to the world and died for us to grant us this forgiveness that God is willing to give. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, NO ONE comes to the Father, except through me (John 14:6).

To finalize this: “Pay attention to what you hear, with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still, more will be added to you”. (Mark 4:24).

(Marcos 4:24).

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...
