So, there is
a little story that Jesus tells when he is in a Pharisee’s house. But before
telling the story it is important to know some cultural background of that
time. As we can imagine that at that time didn’t have closed shoes to keep
their feet clean, hence the washing feet was provided as a gesture of good
education and compassion to the guest. Second, women always had their hair
tidied up, for whatever reason she unbounded her hair in public it would
cause a shock and some misreading about who she was. So now let’s
go back to the story. Luke 7:36-50, tells that there was this Pharisee called Simon
who invited Jesus to a dinner in his house. He was interested in getting to
know Jesus; however, he didn't provide the washing feet basin to Jesus when
he arrived. But suddenly a woman showed up, this particular woman was known
as a sinner and knelt at Jesus' feet shedding tears of gratitude and pouring
perfume while kissing his feet then she wiped them off with her own hair. Simon thought
that was unfortunate because he knew her past and as a good Jew, in his mind,
Jesus shouldn’t have let her touch him, after all, she was a sinner and
therefore unclean. While he was thinking that, obviously Jesus knew his
thoughts, asked him something with a little story. “He said “Simon, a
creditor who had two debtors, one owed him 500 and the other 50. Both of them
had nothing with which to pay. Yet the creditor forgave them. Then Jesus
asked Simon “which one of them loves the creditor the most?” Simon answered,
“the one who had much to be forgiven.” Jesus agreed with him. “The moral of
the story. Jesus was trying to show the contrast between the two attitudes of
mind and heart. In other words, this woman who had much to be forgiven loved
him very much while Simon was not conscious of his sins nor his lack of love
for Jesus. Simon thought of himself as a good man in the sight of man and
God. That woman on the other hand was very conscious of her need for
forgiveness. One thing
that shuts man off from God is self-sufficiency”. (This was a quote from my

Jesus para um jantar em sua casa. Ele estava interessado em conhecer Jesus;
Simão respondeu: “aquele a
quem muito tinha que ser perdoado”. Jesus concordou com ele. "A moral da história. Jesus
Deus é a autossuficiência”.

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...
