We can't rush Jesus // Não podemos apressar Jesus

Sometimes things seem tough. Like life. Like elections! I am not going to talk about that. Bad example. Jesus sometimes had some hard words for his disciples and they could not get their heads around what Jesus was talking about. Later on... I mean… later on after some long time I dare to say the Holy Spirit could open their eyes in understanding so they could finally get what Jesus had talked about.

I’ve just read the passage when Jesus said, “our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep”. As he did later, he could just say that Lazarus had died. When he said it plainly so they could understand what he meant by “fallen asleep” he added, “for your sake, I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe” (John 11:14). Ouch! Lazarus was his friend, right? It would sound weird if I told my friends that one of my friends had died and I was glad I wasn’t there. At first, anyone would think, wow that was very insensitive on his part. Why not think that? Because at first, it was.

So, it happens in our lives. Sometimes we get bad news, and we try to soften it up… pretend that we understand and are strong enough to handle it, but deep down we have no idea what is going on. Why has God allowed such tragedies? Martha in the story said, “Oh Jesus if you were here…”

But the thing is, He is here and He is in control. And for our own sake, he did the way he did so we may believe. We live in a different world, however, it still applies. Today we have airplanes, cars, cell phones, and all these gadgets to help us with “time” but sometimes it seems they are just not enough. We want faster, we want the way we believe is the best way. We don’t even consider that there are other people watching. We don’t even think about how else these tragedies may affect positively others’ lives.

You see… Martha and Mary were suffering; they were about to face some struggles in their lives because of the death of their brother. At that time, women without a man weren’t great. They couldn’t really work, they weren’t accepted in the society… something like that.. so, it would be very hard. So they were not only just missing their brother; they were thinking about their future and if Jesus had been there and had avoided all that, they knew he could have done… but somehow he delayed his return even though he knew Lazarus was ill.

I would be very upset with him. “Thank you Jesus for your delay. See… now he is dead. What now?” Probably, they thought like that. Maybe we think like that when we don’t get what we want when we want it. Thank you Lord, but…

Jesus had another thing in mind. His purposes. Not ours. His. His glory, not ours. So he sees our real intentions. He knows why we want what we want and when we want. But we don’t seek hard enough to know what it is that he wants with all these that are happening.

I can spend days and days here complaining about my life that didn’t go the way I planned. But I’ll tell you, my plans weren’t planned with Jesus’ plans. If only I had asked him first what is that he wanted from me, maybe I would not be so frustrated at first. Now I kind of get it.

As Jesus used to say things to his disciples and they usually didn’t get it at first, we are the same. Jesus keeps telling us a lot of things and we are so focused on the present moment, in our problems, pains, works, jobs, families, and sicknesses… that when Jesus speaks it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Because we know that He loves us, but he also has plans and most of the time we seem not to be interested in His plans.

A lot of things happen in our life that may be used to make people believe in Him. I may even died before seeing what my life was all about. Maybe it is not in life his purposes but in death. The way a lot of people face death, diseases, treatments, and hardships that get the attention of other people. Maybe we don’t need to go to another country and be a missionary or preach every Sunday or bring a friend to church… but simply the way we live and die will bring people to Christ. It is not really up to us to convict sinners of their sins, is it?

We can only point them in the direction of salvation. It is up to the Holy Spirit to touch their hearts and then their decision of coming or not to Christ. There are a lot of steps between us and repentance.

We can’t rush Jesus. He has his own schedule. The way we live is really the point. Our ears and hearts must be open. There is this verse that I love and I see it everywhere: For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under the heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Às vezes as coisas parecem difíceis. Como a vida. Como eleições! Eu não vou falar sobre isso. Mau exemplo.

Nossos ouvidos e corações devem estar abertos. (Eclesiastes 3:1)

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...
