Everyone did what was right in their own eyes // E todos faziam o que era certo aos seus proprios olhos

There is a chapter in the Bible that horrifies me every time I read it. I don’t even like to think about it. Strangely, I have been thinking about it since I read it: Judges chapter 19. I am not going to quote it.

Why am I telling you this?

First, I think this chapter of the Bible is intended to do exactly this: horrify us. We are supposed to become indignant, appalled, and sad—very sad.

What happened in that chapter is the result of their choices, not one man’s choice, but Israel’s choices. They had chosen to betray their God. They turned their backs to God. So, did God punish them? No. God did not. God just let them be. “Israel had no king, and they did what was right in their own eyes.” They had decided they had no king. Not that a king would make much difference (we’ll see in the next books of the Bible).  They rejected God as their King. They had forgotten about the Law.

As we read this book, we see that every time they remember God, and ask for help, God did provide help and deliverance.

But enough is enough.

God kept His distance and watched the way they were going. They were going to self-destruction. To the point of almost annihilating one tribe. They had a civil war among them.

People judge the Bible for having stories such as this.

But the Bible doesn’t lie, doesn’t hide or mask the truth to make us feel better. That story is the reality of mankind without God.

Guess what? That is the way we are right now. Just turn on the TV and watch. Violence everywhere. We have wars, rebellions, rapes, thefts, lies, adulteries, drunkenness, prostitution, slavery and so much more.

Why would you complain about the Bible having such stories? The Bible is not a fairy tale. The Bible shows us our true nature. We are violent, unable to love our own brothers and neighbors. The only thing that matters is our ego. The self-adoration that we see nowadays is something that horrifies me. People are so focused on themselves that helping a brother seems like a fairy tale.

The world has no king, and they do what it is right in their eyes. That is our reality.

When we decided to choose a king, the King of kings, to govern our lives, we passed from the stage of numbness to sensitivity and sensibility. We start to see how badly Mandkind is doing. We see the Way; Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. There is no such thing as “My truth, your truth.” There is my opinion, my choices, and your opinion and your choices. That doesn’t make it true.

Whenever we decide to call out to God, He is ready to come and help us. He will send a deliverer to rescue us from the pit we fell into.

One day, the King will come to reign over the whole Earth as He promised. You may not want to believe in that. It is your choice. I’d rather believe in something that brings me hope than believe in nothing and feel despair.

If you have never tried Jesus, why not give Him a chance in your life for real? Do it like you mean it.

Adivinha? É assim que estamos agora. Basta ligar a TV e assistir.

Vemos o Caminho; Jesus é o Caminho, a Verdade e a Vida.

I see Grace in the time of the Law // Eu vejo Graça no tempo da Lei

People frequently say that the Old Testament is the time of the law, and now we are under the Grace of God. Surprisingly, I just found out an explicit act of the Grace of God in the Old Testament. As I read chapter 9 of Deuteronomy , in which has a title Not because of Righteousness (ESV). I am stunned to see verses 4 - 6, they say: “ Do not say in your heart , after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘ It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. 5 Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.6 “Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving y...

No "trouble-free" card for you // Nenhum cartão "livre-de-problemas" para você

The Word of the Lord is beautiful and true. In there, you find so many poems. This is the form the Bible authors chose to communicate the Word of the LORD, and it is profound. I’ve been listening to the Bible Project podcast for more than a year now. Lately, they are covering the theme of “The Wilderness”. Now, everywhere I read in the Scripture, I see something related to it. It is amazing. I am now in the book of the prophet Isaiah, chapter 43. And guess what? It is wonderful. Just in the first few verses, you find that God is telling His people that it doesn’t matter what sort of hardship they are going through, He, the Creator, will deliver them. Actually, it is said like this: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior....

The oppressive urge to speak // A necessidade opressiva de falar

Should I keep quiet forever? Is silence that bad? Can’t I stand my own thoughts that I need to say out loud? What kind of thoughts come to my mind? Are they generally good or bad? If I choose to speak up, to whom would it benefit? If anyone ever. Let me be clear: It is better not to say a word than say words that will do more harm than good. What if it is the truth? I ask, why would you say it? How would you say it? The truth will come out eventually. You don’t need to lie or be rude. What we must do is to be kind. If I tell you the truth in a harsh way, will you accept, or will you only hear the harsh sound of my voice and ignore completely what I was trying to say? Sometimes, not even the kindest words won’t make it through because the listener isn’t listening at all. The listener doesn’t care about your opinion, doesn’t care about others. The listener just cares about himself. The listener just wants to say w...
