The deserts we go through // Os desertos que passamos

My family is very worried about what is going on in Brazil, mostly about politics. As they asked me to pray, I am praying for it. Last night, I think, before falling asleep, one thought came to mind. The talk Jesus and Pilate had. When Pilate confronted Jesus, saying, “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. (John 19:10 – 11). I asked God, yeah… I remember this part. What about it? So, the answer came to my mind: who has the authority over the governments of the world? Who has given them authority? Who put them there?” Right.

This was one thing. First of all, God knows everything and has everything under his control. Just the fact of knowing this should be enough not to fret.

Then this morning, while watching the Bible Project class about Abraham, something else struck me again. God tests us. All the time. From the beginning. He has given us the freedom to choose to trust in Him, or make up our own decision based on our poor knowledge of the things. After all that Abraham and Sarah did. All the sins against people that they committed. Including Hagar. God decided to teach Abraham that we should not play god. God asks for a sacrifice. A sort of sacrifice of atonement. Why? To atone for their sins. They sent Hagar and Ishmael to the desert to die, and their cry rose to God. God is always moved when He hears the cry of the innocent. Abraham should surrender his son as an atonement sacrifice, a burnt offering. Give it all. Burnt offering is a symbol of complete surrender. Abraham probably passed those 3 days on the way thinking about all the bad choices he and Sarah had made. He didn’t know that was going to be a test. I can’t imagine how awful Abraham must have felt. The confusion. The uncertainty. The whys. The number of things that must have been going through his mind during those days.

To obey God requires not only faith but courage.

God sees everything. He is aware of evil in the world. There will be a time for judgment. When God told Abraham about his seed, He also warned him that they would be foreigners for a long time. They should go through a tough time. Ironic is the fact that they would be slaves in the land where Hagar was from. God knew what they would do to Hagar.

God’s tests aren’t easy nor fast. They take time to make sure a lesson will be learned.  We go through deserts in our lives. Most of the characters in the Bible went through a season of drought. In the desert. Where the only thing that rests is our trust in God. In the desert, God meets us. Think about Hagar, Moses, David, Elijah, the people of Israel for 40 years, and Jesus for 40 days. We won’t have only springs and harvests. We have winters and summers. We have chaos and hardships. So in these times, we learn to put our trust in Him who knows everything. He is the provider. Brazil might go through a rough patch for a while, or not. But do not be mistaken. Who gave them the authority to play powerfully? Pharaoh had power and was an authority of the region; he ended up drowned in the sea.

The desert most of the time is inevitable. When that is so, how should it be your prayer? Don’t waste your time asking for deliverance. The deliverance will come. It took 400 years for them. I hope that won’t be the case for Brazil. So, ask God for strength and wisdom to learn how to pass through this desert. Ask for faith and peace of mind. Just be sure that God is in control. We go through whatever we need to go through.

May Your Kingdom come, May Your Will be done.

God always gives us exactly what we need. We take bitter medicine to heal. God gives us deserts to transform and shape us into His image and likeness.

Sometimes there is no other way; we must go through it.

Don’t be afraid, this also shall pass.

(João 19:10-11) Eu perguntei a Deus, sim... Eu me lembro dessa parte.

A confusão. A incerteza.

No deserto.

A libertação virá.

Venha o Teu Reino, seja feita a Tua Vontade.

My take on these stories // Minha opinião nessas histórias

The 2 Samuel 9 and 10 are about David’s kindness toward others. One person received his kindness humbly, knowing that wasn’t expected from that king in particular. Saul was the first king of Israel and did not obey the word of the LORD. Therefore, the kingdom was taken away from him and his lineage. God announced to Saul that he was going to give the kingdom to someone else. Being David. Because David was not a descendant of Saul, once he started reigning, it was expected that the new king, non-descendant of the former, would kill all the former king’s descendants so no one would stand in the line of succession. Bu David did not do that. Instead, he chose to show kindness toward the last person from Saul’s house.  Saul’s grandson accepted David’s kindness. And we have a beautiful story about grace.  Chapter 10, however, tells a different story. A story of a man who didn’t accept David’s kindness because that was what he was. A person who suspected everyone around him. He ...

Arise and eat // Levante e coma

He came to a broom bush, sat under it, and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough,  Lord ,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”   5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once, an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”   6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the  Lord  came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”   8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. (1 Kings 19: 4-8) How many times have you wished that this life were over? I have wished that many times. Sometimes it is just too painful, or sad, or hopeless, isn’t it? You know, Elijah...

Choose to be full of...// Escolha ser cheio de...

Can you choose to be   Joyful? (Full of joy) Peaceful? (full of peace) Patient? (full of patience) Kind? (full of kindness) Good? (full of goodness) Faithful? (full of faith) Gentle? (full of gentleness) Generous? (full of generosity) Self-controlled? (totally self-controlled) Can you choose to be like that all the time? To everyone?   What other religion would promise you that? I am not saying that all Christians are like that all the time. No, we are not, unfortunately. However, we are prone to be more successful than others, do you know why?  When Jesus was lifted to the heavens after his resurrection, he promised that a few days later, His Spirit would come to live in us. The Holy Spirit is our helper. When we live a godly life, a prayer life, and are filled with the Holy Spirit, those are the characteristics that should be seen in us—if not all of them, at least most of them.  Would you like to live like that? To treat people like that? Well, I suppose so. ...
