Meaningless all is meaningless // Insignificante, tudo é insignificante

 

Ecclesiastes 9 3This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil, and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. 4 Anyone who is among the living has hope[b]—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion! 5 For the living know that they will die,     but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward,     and even their name is forgotten. 6 Their love, their hate     and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part     in anything that happens under the sun. 7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. 9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. 11 I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift     or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise     or wealth to the brilliant     or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. 12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net,     or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times     that fall unexpectedly upon them. I have always liked this book. I’ve heard people saying that it is depressing. I couldn’t agree more. It is a little bit, so is life. Look around. No one is completely happy nor completely unhappy. There are moments of happiness and unhappiness in everyone’s lives. Problems happen to all of us. There hasn’t been one person free of problems in all human history. The good thing about this book is it teaches real life. Be organized. Be clean. Go after things that matter, because even those things are vanity. Why? Because they are all going to pass. Nothing is forever in this life. Nothing is new. We are bound to make the same mistakes humans have been making since the beginning. We are always going after the wind with our thirst for power and money and fame and acknowledgements. We are vain. We forget to learn from the past. We are arrogant, because we think we know better. We think we deserve the best, and when that doesn’t happen, we play the victim card. We want more. More health, more power, even more grace. And when that doesn’t happen. We get discouraged. We blame God. We say, God doesn’t exist, or God doesn’t care about me. God is not fair. “Whatever”, I imagine God saying. It is not that He doesn’t care. We haven’t learned the lesson yet, because if we had, we wouldn't be saying it. The same fate can fall on anyone. He is fair enough to let the sun shine on both, good and bad. We are blessed every day with the sun, the rain (not so often in Southern California), the wind, the moon, and the stars. What do we do? We take them for granted. As if God owed them to us. God promised them to us. He is faithful, despite our sins. So when the blessings don’t come when we expect them, what should we do? Solomon would say, “Enjoy the blessings you have now; why worry about the things you don’t have yet?” This is our problem. We worry too much about things we don’t have, and we fail to enjoy what we do have. Maybe, just maybe, that is why we don’t get what we want or lose what we have sometimes, because we failed to do our part, which is to enjoy what God has already given us. We keep looking around, fussing around, crying out loud for things that aren’t ours to begin with; then we blame Him as if He has the obligation to give us whatever we want, however we want. He is God; we can call Him our Father. But He is no one’s genie of the lamp or slave. What is the most important thing we have that God wants so much? Our commitment to Him. Our souls committed to Him. Nothing else matters. Because everything else will perish. Nothing else will be ours after we die. Even our spouses aren’t ours after we die. Until death do us part. People do crazy and stupid things because they are way too attached to the things of this life. And instead of thinking about what we are going to leave for them, because we ain’t taking any with us to the grave, no. Those with power are doing their best to leave nothing, nothing at all, to the next generation. Their greed is so supernatural that I am truly impressed. How can we, the non-rich, enjoy life when we are being squeezed to death? There is no peace in the land of the living because of the greed of the super wealthy people. Yes, they are to blame. Who else? The liars, the violent, the angry, the envious, the murderous, etc. We are all to blame because at some point you and I also contributed to it. We buy things that pollute the earth, we buy things that were made by slaves’ hands, and so many things that make us all guilty. Yet, Jesus knew all this. Unlike the other religions, my God is a merciful God, and commands us to be merciful as well. Are we always? Of course not. But we should definitely try. The world by itself is already hard enough to live in. Oh boy,  how many times I wanted to be gone, done with this life. I don’t know you, but enjoying life the way it is right now, it isn’t an easy task. We really need to make an effort (right now) and wait patiently for the next season. Who knows what will come?! By the way, now is all we have. The past is set, the future doesn’t exist. We only have Now. Better get going with this commandment. Eat, drink, and be merry for the rest is vanity. Além disso, o coração das pessoas está cheio de maldade; há loucura em seus corações enquanto vivem e, depois, juntam-se aos mortos. 4 Quem está entre os vivos tem esperança — até mesmo um cachorro vivo está em melhor situação do que um leão morto! 5 Pois os vivos sabem que hão de morrer,      mas os mortos não sabem nada; não têm mais recompensa,    e até o seu nome é esquecido. 6 Seu amor, seu ódio     e sua inveja há muito desapareceu;    nunca mais terão parte    em nada do que acontece debaixo do sol. 7 Vá, coma o seu pão com alegria e beba o seu vinho com o coração alegre, pois Deus já aprovou o que você faz. 8 Esteja sempre vestido de branco e unja sempre a cabeça com óleo. 9 Desfrute a vida com a esposa que você ama, durante todos os dias desta vida sem sentido que Deus lhe deu debaixo do sol — todos os seus dias sem sentido. Pois essa é a sua porção na vida e no seu trabalho árduo debaixo do sol. 10 Tudo o que a sua mão encontrar para fazer, faça-o com todas as suas forças, pois no reino dos mortos, para onde você vai, não há trabalho, nem planejamento, nem conhecimento, nem sabedoria. 11 Vi ainda outra coisa debaixo do sol: A corrida não é para os velozes nem a batalha para os fortes, nem o alimento vem para os sábios, nem a riqueza para os brilhantes, nem o favor para os instruídos; mas o tempo e o acaso acontecem a todos eles. 12 Além disso, ninguém sabe quando chegará a sua hora: Assim como os peixes são apanhados em uma rede cruel, ou as aves são presas em uma armadilha, assim as pessoas são apanhadas por tempos difíceis que caem inesperadamente sobre elas. Sempre gostei deste livro. Já ouvi pessoas dizerem que ele é deprimente. Concordo plenamente. Ele é um pouco, assim como a vida. Olhe ao redor. Ninguém é completamente feliz nem completamente infeliz. Há momentos de felicidade e de infelicidade na vida de todos. Problemas acontecem com todos nós. Não houve uma única pessoa livre de problemas em toda a história da humanidade. O lado bom deste livro é que ele ensina sobre a vida real. Seja organizado. Seja limpo. Busque as coisas que importam, pois até mesmo elas são vaidade. Por quê? Porque todas elas vão passar. Nada dura para sempre nesta vida. Nada é novo. Estamos fadados a cometer os mesmos erros que os humanos vêm cometendo desde o início. Estamos sempre correndo atrás do vento com nossa sede de poder, dinheiro, fama e reconhecimento. Somos vaidosos. Esquecemos de aprender com o passado. Somos arrogantes porque achamos que sabemos mais. Achamos que merecemos o melhor e, quando isso não acontece, fazemos o papel de vítimas. Queremos mais. Mais saúde, mais poder, até mesmo mais graça. E, quando isso não acontece, desanimamos. Culpamos a Deus. Dizemos: "Deus não existe", "Deus não se importa comigo", "Deus não é justo". "Pois é", imagino Deus dizendo. Não é que Ele não se importe. É que ainda não aprendemos a lição; se tivéssemos aprendido, não estaríamos falando sobre isso. O mesmo destino pode recair sobre qualquer um. Ele é justo o suficiente para deixar o sol brilhar tanto para os bons quanto para os maus. Somos abençoados todos os dias com o sol, a chuva (não tão frequente no sul da Califórnia), o vento, a lua e as estrelas. O que fazemos? Nós os tomamos como garantidos. Como se Deus nos devesse essas coisas. Deus nos prometeu essas coisas. Ele é fiel, apesar de nossos pecados. Então, quando as bênçãos não chegam quando as esperamos, o que devemos fazer? Salomão diria: "Aproveite as bênçãos que você tem agora; por que se preocupar com as coisas que você ainda não tem?" Esse é o nosso problema. Preocupamo-nos demais com as coisas que não temos e deixamos de aproveitar o que realmente temos. Talvez — apenas talvez — seja por isso que não conseguimos o que queremos ou, às vezes, perdemos o que temos: porque falhamos em fazer a nossa parte, que é desfrutar daquilo que Deus já nos deu. Continuamos olhando em volta, inquietos, clamando por coisas que nem sequer são nossas; então, nós O culpamos como se Ele tivesse a obrigação de nos dar o que quisermos, da maneira que quisermos. Ele é Deus; podemos chamá-Lo de nosso Pai. Mas Ele não é o gênio da lâmpada nem escravo de ninguém. Qual é a coisa mais importante que temos e que Deus tanto deseja? Nosso compromisso com Ele. Nossas almas entregues a Ele. Nada mais importa. Porque tudo o mais perecerá. Nada mais será nosso depois que morrermos. Nem mesmo nossos cônjuges nos pertencem após a morte. Até que a morte nos separe. As pessoas fazem coisas loucas e estúpidas porque estão apegadas demais às coisas desta vida. E, em vez de pensarem no que vão deixar para os outros — já que não levaremos nada conosco para o túmulo, não é mesmo? — Aqueles que detêm o poder fazem de tudo para não deixar nada, absolutamente nada, para a próxima geração. A ganância deles é tão descomunal que fico realmente impressionada. Como nós, que não somos ricos, podemos aproveitar a vida quando estamos sendo espremidos até a morte? Não há paz na terra dos vivos por causa da ganância dos super-ricos. Sim, a culpa é deles. De quem mais? Dos mentirosos, dos violentos, dos coléricos, dos invejosos, dos assassinos, etc. Todos nós temos culpa, pois, em algum momento, você e eu também contribuímos para isso. Compramos coisas que poluem a Terra, compramos produtos feitos por mãos escravizadas e tantas outras coisas que nos tornam culpados. No entanto, Jesus sabia de tudo isso. Ao contrário de outras religiões, meu Deus é um Deus misericordioso e nos ordena que também sejamos misericordiosos. Será que somos sempre assim? Claro que não. Mas certamente deveríamos tentar. Viver neste mundo já é difícil o suficiente por si só. Nossa, quantas vezes eu quis partir deste mundo, acabar com tudo. Não sei quanto a você, mas aproveitar a vida como ela está agora não é tarefa fácil. Precisamos realmente nos esforçar (agora mesmo) e aguardar pacientemente pela próxima fase. Quem sabe o que virá?! Aliás, o agora é tudo o que temos. O passado está definido; o futuro não existe. Só temos o Agora. É melhor começarmos a seguir esse mandamento: coma, beba e alegre-se, pois o resto é vaidade. P.S.: Não defendo a vida boêmia nem o hedonismo. Vá ler e estudar a Bíblia para compreender a ideia por trás desse tema.
