Do you presume? // Você presume?

Quais outras palavras para presunção? suposição, afronta, suposição, presunção, arrogância, pressuposição, conjectura, insolência, audácia.

Presumption

1. the act of presuming

2. bold or insolent behavior or manners

3. a belief or assumption based on reasonable evidence

4. a ground or basis on which to presume

To presume:

1. To take for granted as being true in the absence of proof to the contrary

2. To constitute reasonable evidence for assuming; appear to prove

3. To venture without authority or permission; dare: He presumed to invite himself to dinner.

4. To take for granted that something is true or factual; make a supposition.

5. To act presumptuously or take unwarranted advantage of something.

“For rebellion is as the sin of divination,

and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry.” 1 Samuel 15:23a

Some other versions say arrogance instead of presumption. But the point is: what happened there in the Bible so Samuel had to say something like that? If you are curious you can open your Bible and read chapter 15 of 1 Samuel; you will notice how presumption and arrogant Saul used to be. He started as from the smallest clan from the smallest tribe, but as they say, “power got in the head”.

Because of that God rejected Saul and gave his kingdom to someone else. Saul made two big mistakes in his reign what can be summarized into one: He openly presumed something and therefore he disobeyed God. He offered sacrifice when it wasn’t his place to do so; and he spare things that God had said to destroy, all because he presumed, he was doing what was right. Through the human eyes, he could be right, but it wasn’t supposed to be seen through human eyes but God’s eyes. They lived under God’s law ultimately. Saul could be being king at the moment, but the last word always is God’s.

From the Bible to our lives. I particularly don’t like presuming. I don’t like presumptuous people. I don’t like people trying to read my mind before I speak, that is wrong.

So, we can be right in some presumptions; but it doesn’t mean it is correct doing it. We are risking misunderstanding, frustrations, misleading situations, and hurting people in the process. So why do it? Are you so sure of yourself or about the other person that you can surely say what they doing or thinking without they telling you first? Why not wait and listen attentively to what they are saying and have the proper answer for that? Why risk it?

By presuming, Saul disobeyed God.  Samuel told him “better obey than to sacrifice” (v.22) Saul was worried about the sacrifices they were supposed to do later, so he thought (Presumed) those sheep and animals were too good to destroy. Why not use them as a sacrifice to God? But God had said to him, destroy them all. Did he misunderstand or thinks his decision was better than God’s? By any chance did God not know about those animals? Did he think God forgot that those animals could be used to sacrifice or to feed the people?

Saul had forgotten who is the real owner of those animals. God created them. God provides everything for His people. Why did Saul presume?

The consequence was he lost the kingdom. No one from his family would heir to the throne. He was done. God was done with him.

Let us be patient and hear people out and obey the Word of God. Because it is better to obey than to sacrifice.

” 1 Samuel 15: 23ª

Saul havia esquecido quem é o verdadeiro dono desses animais.

Ele estava acabado. Deus acabou com ele.

Sejamos pacientes, ouçamos as pessoas e obedeçamos a Palavra de Deus.

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...
