What kind of religious person are you? // Que tipo de religioso é você?

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in the mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. (…) If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit the orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” (James 1: 22 – 24, 26 – 27)

What is James talking about?

If he had the New Testament in his hands, I would say he would be talking about Jesus’ sermon on the mount. Because that is what the Law and the Prophets are all about. Jesus taught how to interpret the Law God gave to Moses back at the Old Testament. He wasn’t saying that they have been doing everything wrong. But the way they were doing was incomplete and shallow. God sees beyond our actions.

You can brag about how many days per week you go to church or serve to the homeless, orphans and widows as much as you want, but if that is not for the Glory of God, all that was worthless. You can say that you are a religious person, and believe in God, but on the daily basis you are a liar, slenderer or you can’t control your eyes and your mouth, your religion is worthless.

We got to remember that God primarily wants your heart, because is from the heart that everything we do shows who we are. We got to remember that God primarily wants your heart because is from the heart that everything we do shows who we are. If you give to God your heart, mind, and body to govern, all your words and deeds will come from Him.  But if you just say that you have a religion and go to church every Sunday, but Monday you flirt with someone else’s wife or lie about something that you think is harmless, or envy and jealousy are in your heart, unforgiveness, judgemental,  revenge and so many other things that you may or may not be aware of; you are just deceiving yourself.

It is written that God will hold us accountable for everything said and done. Are we really that naïve to think that a little “white” lie is nothing, or when we ignore the homeless, act unkind to a person, God is not seeing us?

James admonishes us to be doers, not only hearers. The sermon on the mount is the User’s manual for a clean life before God, knowing that God knows our weaknesses and He is graceful, and His steadfast love endures forever. However, to reach the God’s “good side” we need to be aware of our actions and that God will be gracious to us when He sees sincerity and meekness in our hearts. He knows we can’t be perfect in everything, but He wants us to try to be perfect as Jesus was. Jesus must be our model, our standard. If we keep our hearts pure and sincere before God, He will strengthen us to be perfect as Jesus was. Jesus said: If you love me, you will keep my commands. We need to love Jesus above everything else including ourselves.

To Be doers means to know the Word of God and practice. We will fail, that is true, but our intentions will be sincere, and God will guide us through to perfection and eternal life.

My life I gave to Jesus, if I die, I’ll be with Him, if I live, I will live for Him. That is what Paul said. My life is not more valuable that my love for Jesus.

I see Grace in the time of the Law // Eu vejo Graça no tempo da Lei

People frequently say that the Old Testament is the time of the law, and now we are under the Grace of God. Surprisingly, I just found out an explicit act of the Grace of God in the Old Testament. As I read chapter 9 of Deuteronomy , in which has a title Not because of Righteousness (ESV). I am stunned to see verses 4 - 6, they say: “ Do not say in your heart , after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘ It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. 5 Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.6 “Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving y...

Doubts and fears leave us halfway // Dúvidas e medos nos deixam na metade do caminho

Despite all the sad news I got this week, we are still standing. I am in the Book of Joshua, in my annual Bible reading. There is a part in the book that is kind of boring. It is the distribution of the cities and borders. It is tempting to skip this part, but something that I heard from the guy from the Bible Project usually says, “it is wisdom literature”, or “meditation literature”. There is something important besides geographical information in these texts. And there is. Joshua 17:18c “though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out”. In the beginning of the book and several other parts too, the LORD says to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous”. What does that mean? What is this book really about? Well, the way I see it might not be the same way you see it. The way I see this book is about how we trust God and obey Him. Then we will see Him doing amazing things. It doesn’t matter how n...

How to Recognize Foolishness and Pursue Wisdom A devotional reflection on humility, discernment, and the cost of our choices Opening Scripture “Do not be wise in your own eyes.” — Proverbs 3:7 Devotional Reading A fool is not the same as an insane person. In my understanding, an insane person is unable to reason clearly; things may not make sense in their mind. A fool, however, is someone who rejects counsel, ignores warnings, disobeys what is right, and acts from wrong motivations. If a person does the wrong thing for the right reason, we may still be able to understand the motive. But foolishness is different: it is often rooted in ignorance, arrogance, and a narrow mind that refuses wisdom. How can we recognize a wise person? In my understanding, a wise person does not act impulsively. This person does not need to suffer through every mistake in order to learn, because wisdom can also come from observing the experiences of ot...
