I saw the light // Eu vi a luz

“12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(John 8:12)

Have you noticed when you are in a real dark place, with no lights on, your eyes get used to the darkness. This happens because we have some specialized cells in our retina that allow our eyes to see a little bit in the darkness. Could we live in darkness? Hmm.. studies say we could. It is not ideal however. I’d say we would get bored pretty fast.

When we are in a dark place for a while, when the light are turned on suddenly (it doesn’t really matter if it is by surprise or not), we feel rather an uncomfortable experience. I would not say painful but uncomfortable, until our eyes get used again to the light.

My point is this: people get used doing what they think is good and right, but not in the sight of God. They prefer being the judge of themselves, like this would make their life better, safer or just like that they are ready to go to heaven. They don’t realize they are living in darkness and their eyes got used to it. They get so used to the darkness they don’t even know what is the light anymore.

The idea of coming to the light might feel a little uncomfortable. They might think “living in the dark is what I know, going to the light is unpredictable, I wouldn’t know what to expect. Too much new information …” they are good at excuses.

21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”

22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”

His first statement was that he is the light of the world, whoever follows him will never walk in darkness. Then he said, if you don’t believe that I am he (the Son of God, the Messiah), you will indeed die in your sins. Jesus was giving them first hand an opportunity to see the light. To be in the light. To have the light. They turned him down. Why? Because they could not believe that the One who they were expecting for so long was there, and he was that man, so simple and normal, like any other man. The fact is they didn’t understand the prophecies.

People today are no different from them. We can’t blame them (although it is somehow annoying, because we are in the light, we see the light, we live in the light), but when in the darkness you can’t trust so easily, you don’t feel safe (because you are not indeed). You don’t see very well. You can’t distinguish right from wrong, a hole on the ground from a black t-shirt on the floor. Being in the darkness is confusing, is lonely and gives you no sense of anything.

But a simple step could turn on the light and distinguish and discern everything. Life under the light is so much better. The same obstacles are there, however we have a better chance of overcoming them.

The light of the world makes all difference.

Do you feel like you are living in darkness? All confusing, hopeless, the same? Have you tried turning on the light? I bet you will feel better.

A luz do mundo faz toda a diferença.

Você sente que está vivendo na escuridão? Tudo confuso, sem esperança, o mesmo? Você já tentou acender a luz? Aposto que você vai se sentir melhor.

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the Word of God to be more acceptable and palatab

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost you

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe
