Light of the World // Luz do mundo

 

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path, Psalm 119:105. Have you ever thought about this verse very carefully? The word of God is light. But we can turn it on literally, right? So how can it be?  As I am listening to the podcast of Bibleproject about the sermon on the mount, the things they are saying enlighten my thoughts! Did you see what I just did? In the same way, the Word of God exists to illuminate our life and paths. The more you read the clearer becomes your path in life. Do you know what else happened? You will shine, like Moses. Why? Because you will start living the Word of God, and you yourself will become a light. Moses spent a lot of time in the presence of God, getting the law, which is the Word of God, the Torah.  When Jesus said, you are the light of the world (Matt 5:14), He meant (very likely) that the closer we get to God through His Word, the lighter we’ll become. And Jesus starts giving some examples of what it means to shine. The light cannot be hidden. The light comes and the darkness flees. That is why He said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven”, Matt 5:16. The light will shine because you will live by His Word and His Word is light. Let’s take a step back now and look at some verses before. Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth”, Matt 5:13. Salt is a preservative. Salt gives flavor. Salt also makes the earth more productive. Salt doesn’t lose its saltness. God in the Old Testament used Salt as a reference to an everlasting covenant with David and Israel. I understood that salt equals covenant. A forever covenant which is written and is considered God’s Word, His promise. God doesn’t change. Salt cannot lose its saltness. Because you live by the Word of God, His Covenant you also are going to make a difference wherever you go. Because that is what salt does. You will fight for justice, and will be a peacemaker for example. If ever you let behind God’s Covenant, He is not leaving you behind, because it is a salt covenant, and forever covenant. He will chase you, and believe me He will find you. Will you accept Him? Once salt, forever salt. Jesus’ point was if salt could lose its saltness what good would be a covenant that wouldn’t last forever? In summary, the Torah is the Word of God, which is light and also a Covenant of salt, an everlasting covenant. Everlasting relationship. A covenant means a relationship bound with a promise, in other words, a legal contract. So, you are the salt of the earth, you are bound legally to God forever.  I can say ‘I am a researcher’ because I read a lot, I study and I research, obviously. So I can say ‘I am the light of the World’ because I read and live by the light of the World, which is the Word of God. Lâmpada para os meus pés é a tua palavra e luz para o meu caminho, Salmos 119:105. Você já pensou sobre esse versículo com muito cuidado? A palavra de Deus é leve. Mas podemos ligá-lo literalmente, certo? Então, como pode ser? Enquanto ouço o podcast do Bible project (podcast so tem em inglês) sobre o sermão da montanha, as coisas que eles estão dizendo iluminam meus pensamentos! Você viu o que eu acabei de fazer? Da mesma forma, a Palavra de Deus existe para iluminar a nossa vida e os nossos caminhos. Quanto mais você lê, mais claro fica o seu caminho na vida. Você sabe o que mais aconteceu? Você brilhará, como Moisés. Por que? Porque você começará a viver a Palavra de Deus e você mesmo se tornará uma luz. Moisés passou muito tempo na presença de Deus, recebendo a lei, que é a Palavra de Deus, a Torá. Quando Jesus disse, vocês são a luz do mundo (Mateus 5:14), Ele quis dizer (muito provavelmente) que quanto mais nos aproximarmos de Deus através da Sua Palavra, mais leves nos tornaremos. E Jesus começa a dar alguns exemplos do que significa brilhar. A luz não pode ser escondida. A luz vem e as trevas fogem. É por isso que Ele disse: “Deixem brilhar a vossa luz diante dos outros, para que vejam as vossas boas obras e glorifiquem o vosso Pai que está nos céus”, Mateus 5:16. A luz brilhará porque você viverá pela Sua Palavra e Sua Palavra é luz. Vamos dar um passo atrás agora e ver alguns versículos anteriores. Jesus disse: “Vós sois o sal da terra”, Mateus 5:13. O sal é um conservante. O sal dá sabor. O sal também torna a terra mais produtiva. O sal não perde o sabor salgado. Deus no Antigo Testamento usou o Sal como referência a uma aliança eterna com Davi e Israel. Entendi que sal é igual a aliança. Uma aliança eterna que está escrita e é considerada a Palavra de Deus, Sua promessa. Deus não muda. O sal não pode perder o seu sabor salgado. Porque você vive pela Palavra de Deus, Sua Aliança, você também fará a diferença onde quer que vá. Porque é isso que o sal faz. Você lutará pela justiça e será um pacificador, por exemplo. Se alguma vez você deixar para trás a Aliança de Deus, Ele não o deixará para trás, porque é uma aliança de sal e uma aliança para sempre. Ele irá persegui-lo e acredite, Ele irá encontrá-lo. Você vai aceitá-lo? Uma vez sal, para sempre sal. O que Jesus queria dizer era que se o sal pudesse perder o seu sabor salgado, de que adiantaria uma aliança que não duraria para sempre? Em resumo, a Torá é a Palavra de Deus, que é luz e também uma Aliança de sal, uma aliança eterna. Relacionamento eterno. Uma aliança significa um relacionamento vinculado a uma promessa, ou seja, um contrato legal. Então, você é o sal da terra, você está legalmente ligado a Deus para sempre. Posso dizer ‘sou pesquisador’ porque leio muito, estudo e pesquiso, obviamente. Então posso dizer ‘Eu sou a luz do mundo’ porque leio e vivo pela luz do mundo, que é a Palavra de Deus.
