Jesus and the rich guy // Jesus e o cara rico

 

In Mark 10:21 Jesus is talking with a rich guy who thought being righteous. He indeed obeyed the Law and its commandments. Why then Jesus told the guy that he needed to sell everything he had, give to the poor and follow him? You see, it isn’t enough to be obedient or morally right, pay your taxes and not kill anybody, or steal or be an adulterer. Yeah, neither of us should be doing that. Pretty much we can see ourselves through our own lenses that we are good people and “deserving” of heaven, isn’t that right?   There are people who will only think about that right before death. When they realize that whatever they believed or not believed during their lives, when death knocks on the door they will have “that flash of their lives passing through their eyes” and probably they will have a glimpse of what comes next. Many repent and they will be saved if they truly believe. Many more will not have that chance or want that chance. They’d rather die with their pride than humiliate themselves in accepting Jesus who offers them grace and an opportunity to do right at least one time in their lives.   Why then Jesus tell the rich guy to sell everything and follow him?   I see two things here. One is power, money, position, acquisitions, fame, whatever. You understand. Those things can take God’s place in your heart. God will not share you with anything or anyone. Either you worship Him or you do not. Hence, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” Matthew 6:24.   In the rich’s heart, there was no space for God. He had other priorities in his life. He might love those things more than anything else. Maybe he was proud of what he had accomplished. Maybe all that money took him to a higher position in society. Who knows? I know that having more than necessary can be harmful for your life, especially your spiritual life.   But keep in mind that with that statement Jesus isn’t saying that you cannot be rich. Or being rich is sinful. Salomon was the richest man on earth at his time, and God was the one who blessed him. But do you know the end of his story? Too much wealth will take you far from God. Money is a sort of god. The more you have the more you want. The more you want the more you’ll think you need. It is an endless cycle. Still, Jesus isn’t saying that is a sin to be rich. Later on, in that passage, Jesus explains to his disciples that it is harder for a rich person to go to heaven. Not because wealth is a sin, but because of the sin that it can bring. It is harder to keep those temptations at bay. What temptations? The greed, the pride, the power, the lust, the ingratitude.   Being poor has its danger too. A poor person can also be greedy, ungrateful, resentful, envious and many more. So, how do we solve this conundrum?   Jesus said, sell everything you have, give to the poor and then follow me.   Giving is one way of curing a lot of those diseases that come with money. When you give something away, or even a gift, and you see the happiness and gratitude on the receiver’s face, it is something very pleasing. (But when we don’t see it, we get sad, sometimes worried, feeling guilty or else; but the ingratitude of others is not our problem. We do our part).   Then, the real treatment and the completion of the healing process. Following Jesus is much more than going to church on Sunday’s morning. Experiencing Jesus is transforming. When you follow with all your heart, and you seek His presence, there are something else.   Ask anyone who has done this recently. It is awesomely good.   When you start learning His word, the more you learn the more you want to learn. You will never cease learning. God is wisdom. God is love. God is peace. God is joy. If you want God in you, you must believe in Jesus story. And you can achieve wisdom, feel loved and able to love, peace forever in your heart and joy despite all the problems.   We all have problems and challenges and disappointments in life, none of that can take away our hope and love for Jesus. Because when we understand what follow Jesus means, we understand that all these earthly problems will pass and we will meet Jesus one day and have eternal life, with real bodies, in a real place. A physical and material place.   That’s why you need to read and study the Bible. There is hope in it.

Em Marcos 10:21, Jesus está conversando com um homem rico que se considerava justo. Ele de fato obedecia à Lei e aos seus mandamentos. Por que então Jesus disse ao homem que ele precisava vender tudo o que tinha, dar aos pobres e segui-lo? Veja bem, não basta ser obediente ou moralmente correto, pagar seus impostos e não matar ninguém, roubar ou ser adúltero. Sim, nenhum de nós deveria fazer isso. Podemos praticamente nos ver através de nossas próprias lentes, como pessoas boas e "merecedoras" do céu, não é mesmo?  Há pessoas que só pensam nisso antes da morte. Quando perceberem que, independentemente do que acreditaram ou não acreditaram durante suas vidas, quando a morte bater à porta, elas terão "aquele flash de suas vidas passando pelos seus olhos" e provavelmente terão um vislumbre do que vem a seguir. Muitos se arrependem e serão salvos se realmente crerem. Muitos outros não terão essa chance ou não a desejarão. Eles preferem morrer com seu orgulho a se humilharem aceitando Jesus, que lhes oferece graça e uma oportunidade de fazer o que é certo pelo menos uma vez na vida.   Por que então Jesus disse ao rico para vender tudo e segui-lo?   Vejo duas coisas aqui. Uma é poder, dinheiro, posição, aquisições, fama, seja lá o que for. Você entende? Essas coisas podem tomar o lugar de Deus em seu coração. Deus não o dividirá com nada nem com ninguém. Ou você O adora ou não. Portanto, “Ninguém pode servir a dois senhores; ou odiará um e amará o outro, ou se dedicará a um e desprezará o outro. Vocês não podem servir a Deus e ao dinheiro” (Mateus 6:24).   No coração do rico, não havia espaço para Deus. Ele tinha outras prioridades em sua vida. Ele poderia amar essas coisas mais do que qualquer outra coisa. Talvez ele estivesse orgulhoso do que havia conquistado. Talvez todo aquele dinheiro o tenha levado a uma posição mais elevada na sociedade. Quem sabe? Eu sei que ter mais do que o necessário pode ser prejudicial para a sua vida, especialmente para a sua vida espiritual.   Mas tenha em mente que, com essa afirmação, Jesus não está dizendo que você não pode ser rico. Ou que ser rico é pecado. Salomão foi o homem mais rico da Terra em sua época, e Deus foi quem o abençoou. Mas você sabe o final da história dele? Muita riqueza o levará para longe de Deus. O dinheiro é uma espécie de deus. Quanto mais você tem, mais você quer. Quanto mais você quer, mais você pensa que precisa. É um ciclo sem fim. Ainda assim, Jesus não está dizendo que ser rico é pecado. Mais adiante, nessa passagem, Jesus explica aos seus discípulos que é mais difícil para uma pessoa rica ir para o céu. Não porque a riqueza seja um pecado, mas por causa do pecado que ela pode trazer. É mais difícil manter essas tentações sob controle. Que tentações? A ganância, o orgulho, o poder, a luxúria, a ingratidão.   Ser pobre também tem seus perigos. Uma pessoa pobre também pode ser gananciosa, ingrata, ressentida, invejosa e muito mais. Então, como resolvemos esse enigma?   Jesus disse: "Venda tudo o que você tem, dê aos pobres e siga-me".   Dar é uma maneira de curar muitas das doenças que vêm com o dinheiro. Quando você dá algo, ou mesmo um presente, e vê a felicidade e a gratidão no rosto de quem recebe, é algo muito agradável. (Mas quando não vemos isso, ficamos tristes, às vezes preocupados, sentindo-nos culpados ou algo assim; mas a ingratidão dos outros não é problema nosso. Fazemos a nossa parte).   Então, vem o verdadeiro tratamento e a conclusão do processo de cura. Seguir Jesus é muito mais do que ir à igreja no domingo de manhã. Experimentar Jesus é transformador. Quando você segue de todo o coração e busca a Sua presença, há algo mais.   Pergunte a qualquer pessoa que tenha feito isso recentemente. É incrivelmente bom.   Quando você começa a aprender a Sua palavra, quanto mais você aprende, mais você quer aprender. Você nunca deixará de aprender. Deus é sabedoria. Deus é amor. Deus é paz. Deus é alegria. Se você quer Deus em você, você deve crer na história de Jesus. E você pode alcançar sabedoria, sentir-se amado e capaz de amar, paz eterna em seu coração e alegria, apesar de todos os problemas.   Todos nós temos problemas, desafios e decepções na vida, e nada disso pode tirar nossa esperança e amor por Jesus. Porque quando entendemos o que significa seguir a Jesus, entendemos que todos esses problemas terrenos passarão e um dia encontraremos Jesus e teremos vida eterna, com corpos reais, em um lugar real. Um lugar físico e material. É por isso que você precisa ler e estudar a Bíblia. Há esperança nela.
