How do you feed your thoughts? // Como voce alimenta seus pensamentos?

We don’t get tired of reading the Bible. Do you want to know why? Because it is like a new book every morning. I have read the whole Bible many times now, about 6 or 7, not sure; and when it is read with patience, and really paying attention, something will catch your eye.

I like Job’s story. Although his friends didn’t really believe in his innocence, that doesn’t mean that what they said are lies. They don’t apply to Job.

You know, Job didn’t fall in Satan’s trap; although he didn’t know what was going on, nor why he was going through all that. His friends didn’t know either. They thought Job had sinned greatly, and he was suffering the consequences of his sin.

A little further into the chapter 2, Job’s wife (I suppose) got tired and didn’t want to go through the ordeal with him, cursed him, and told him to curse his God and die. I would not want to be in his place, especially at this moment. Not the point. The curious thing was his reply to her: “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” People only want the God of blessings. I am not saying that our God is the kind of God who will go on punishing everyone without a reason, without waiting for a long time for the person to repent. God is a merciful God, slow to anger, kind of God. But what Job said, few people take notice of it.

I heard so many times that I should pray more, I need more faith, and so on, you already know the reason. Sometimes, we need some trials to learn a few things. Sometimes, we need some trials to even increase our faith. How do you suppose we increase our faith? Relaxing in a resort, sipping a cocktail all day long? How do you suppose your spiritual life will improve? How would you get closer to God if not by some trials? Trials take us to our knees, day after day, seeking His presence. This is how God takes us close. He rewards us with so many blessings, too. How often do we fail to acknowledge them? How long in your prayer do you spend just thanking God for all the blessings? One minute, ten minutes, one hour?

Then, the longer the trial, the harder it gets for us to see clearly the blessings. We don’t. It is not a sin to get sad, discouraged, and dismayed. It is alright. After all, we are humans filled with emotions and feelings. Trials also tend to teach us how to deal with them. Eliphaz, one of Job’s friends, noticed that Job was getting depressed. Who wouldn’t in his place?

Job was a good guy, a wise guy. Ready to help others at any time. So Eliphaz says that now that trouble comes to him, he is discouraged and dismayed.

Eliphaz is arguing Job's innocence because he doesn't believe in it, but inside of his argument, there are a few things that could be applied to us.

Job 5:2 “Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple;” isn’t this true? What has caused you to resent someone? Do you envy someone? Think about it. Why are you lashing out at that person all the time? Where is your patience? Where is your love for your neighbor? Sometimes we don’t realize what is kept deep in our hearts, causing us to act so out-of-character. Is it resentment? Envy? Prejudice? Take a deeper look into your own heart. Think about that person whom you are always blaming.

verse 6 – for hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground”. Sometimes, our own choices take us to dark and less-wanted places. We thought that we were doing the right thing. You should ask, “for whom?” A “small” lie can develop in some very problematic relationships.

I could go on, but I’ll stop here. These are just food for thought. Problems at home might have come from a very small thing that festered, and now you don’t even know how to fix it. Like faith with a mustard seed size, I think the same goes for other things like lies, envy, resentments, and hate. It grows and takes roots, deep and strong roots. Very hard to uphold.

Careful with the food you feed your thoughts.

Jó 5:2 “A ira mata o tolo, e a inveja destrói o simples.”

My take on these stories // Minha opinião nessas histórias

The 2 Samuel 9 and 10 are about David’s kindness toward others. One person received his kindness humbly, knowing that wasn’t expected from that king in particular. Saul was the first king of Israel and did not obey the word of the LORD. Therefore, the kingdom was taken away from him and his lineage. God announced to Saul that he was going to give the kingdom to someone else. Being David. Because David was not a descendant of Saul, once he started reigning, it was expected that the new king, non-descendant of the former, would kill all the former king’s descendants so no one would stand in the line of succession. Bu David did not do that. Instead, he chose to show kindness toward the last person from Saul’s house.  Saul’s grandson accepted David’s kindness. And we have a beautiful story about grace.  Chapter 10, however, tells a different story. A story of a man who didn’t accept David’s kindness because that was what he was. A person who suspected everyone around him. He ...

Arise and eat // Levante e coma

He came to a broom bush, sat under it, and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough,  Lord ,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”   5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once, an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”   6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the  Lord  came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”   8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. (1 Kings 19: 4-8) How many times have you wished that this life were over? I have wished that many times. Sometimes it is just too painful, or sad, or hopeless, isn’t it? You know, Elijah...

Solitude and Silence // Solidão e silêncio

In moments of peace and tranquility, it is useful to remember times of stress and struggle by Thomas à Kempis Whenever you are enjoying some time of peace and rest, it is useful to call to mind those times when you have been busy, overworked, or stressed. Whenever you are enjoying the calmness of solitude and silence, it is useful to reflect on those occasions when you have been assaulted with noise and activity. Indeed, calling such things to mind is a sure and effective way of learning to love and value the peaceful tranquility of your times of solitude! If you reflect upon how easily you can become anxious or worried, or how little it takes to perturb your soul, you will also realize that the achievement of true inner peace is not something which human efforts can ever achieve on their own. Left to yourself, how often you have fallen prey to anxiety, even when there is little or no real need to worry! How often, even when you are surro...
