A Santidade do Senhor

I keep coming back to the same subject, I don't know why. Maybe you have realized already that I love the Hebrew Bible. I mean, the Old Testament. Why? It is not that I don’t love the New Testament, I do; the thing with the old is because, I think, it isn’t so easy to understand or at least, to our modern society. So, I like a good challenge, and to bring the Old Testament to life, to my life and try to live it out, not like the Jews do in Judaism, but as a Christian who love and appreciate the Word of God with the same respect and importance. Once, a pastor back in New York told me what the book of Leviticus was all about. He said, this is a beautiful book that teaches us about being holy. When I heard him saying that it amazed me because I have never heard someone saying something like that about the book that most of us “skip” because it is a boring, filled of laws and regulations that we Christian "don’t need it". Every time I read it, I realize that we need this book as much as we need the letters of Paul, which, by the way, might have this Scroll glued to his face all his life. If you want to be holy, where else do you expect to learn if not from the book that has the biggest count of the word Holy from the whole Bible? According to Google, in the book of Leviticus the word Holy appears 152 times. It is the central theme of this book. Think about it, you want to be holy and do you expect the way to achieve holiness to be easy? In this book, God is saying what kind of person one should become to be considered holy. But God doesn’t say that it is impossible. On the contrary, he says do this or be like that because I am holy.  Maybe it is not about you becoming holy, but about you recognizing the holiness of God therefore there is a need to be like that. God was physically living among them in the camp. The camp should be a holy ground, a holy place. Everyone should fall in line, or else. We think, God was so drastic, with words like “the person should be cut off”, “killed”, or “detestable”, “abominable”, and many other words that we avoid saying because it sounds too strong. Oh yeah it is strong. It should be still. All those things laid down like that, to make them a holy nation. A nation who should know how to behave and treat one another, they had to be different from their neighbor, besides their God was like that, and his word was to be considered holy and worthy to be obeyed with fear. God wanted His people to be like Him, to be His representative in this World; how else would you suggest being done?  And The Lord knew exactly with whom He was dealing. A stiffed neck people. Do you see yourself differently? They had God in their midst, in a form of a column of fire, and that didn’t stop them for sinning against the Lord. Knowing the law and failing to obey it yeah, it makes you guilty, but you are still guilty if you fail to learn the law and obey it, aren’t you? Any law. Anywhere. Ignorance does not acquit you from guilt. This book doesn’t just give us the law but show us through it the seriousness the law because it is God revealing himself to them, to us. What kind of God is this one? How is eHe He different from the other pagan gods? This is worship God 101: If I don’t know what He is like, how can I please Him? Yeah, I know, we live in a postmodern era, under God’s grace; however it is the same God. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, David, Daniel. It is the same God who chose to become a man and show us how far He was willing to go for us. He loves us even though we are as stiff neck as His own people; we are rebels, we distort His word, we smooth things over so people won’t get offended with words like “cut off and destestable”. He didn’t change. He is still the same, His Word is still the same, and yet, He promised He would come to give us a New Covenant, one which the law would be kept in our hearts, and He would be our God and we would be His people. We killed him. He went down willingly. Because this was the only way.  How far are you willing to go for him? I am not talking about mission; our first responsibility is with ourselves. Learning God’s word, getting close to Him, getting to know Him means understanding his standards. It is a very tall bar but it should be worthy, he is promising eternity. We say we are part of his people, how can it be if we avoid understanding the basics? Draw the kind of person God wants us to be. You’d be surprised, we are this close to being if only we knew Him better. Jesus came to fulfill the law, what does that mean? I don’t think he ever said we would be exempt from it.  On the contrary, the Holy Spirit came to help us to be what? Holy.  He is our helper to fulfill the law. Without Him it is quite a task. Especially when we blend it with Jesus’ explanation on the sermon on the mount. Jesus is the same God; He just let us know his heart. My understanding is they are the same with the difference that achieving holiness through the law only is impossible, it gets harder after Jesus explaining it, but then He promised a Helper. The one who would plant the law in our hearts as the prophets had written. God wanted the law in our hearts, imprinted there, only by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit, we can be holy like He is holy. Being holy means being different from the rest. We choose to live following God’s word. The whole Word. If you say you are part of His people, you better start acting like it.

Eu fico voltando para o mesmo assunto. Eu não sei porquê. Talvez você já tenha percebido que eu amo a Bíblia Hebraica. Quero dizer, o Antigo Testamento. Por quê? Não é que eu não ame o Novo Testamento, eu amo; a questão com o Antigo é que, eu acho, ele não é tão fácil de entender, ou pelo menos, para a nossa sociedade moderna. Então, eu gosto de um bom desafio e de trazer o Antigo Testamento à vida, à minha vida, e tentar vivê-lo, não como os judeus fazem no judaísmo, mas como um cristão que ama e aprecia a Palavra de Deus com o mesmo respeito e importância. Certa vez, um pastor em Nova York me contou sobre o que era o livro de Levítico. Ele disse: "Este é um livro lindo que nos ensina sobre ser santo". Quando o ouvi dizer isso, fiquei surpreso porque nunca tinha ouvido alguém dizer algo assim sobre o livro que a maioria de nós "pula" porque é chato, cheio de leis e regulamentos que nós, cristãos, "não precisamos". Cada vez que o leio, percebo que precisamos deste livro tanto quanto precisamos das cartas de Paulo, que, aliás, talvez tenha tido este pergaminho colado ao rosto por toda a vida. Se você quer ser santo, onde mais espera aprender, senão no livro que tem o maior número de ocorrências da palavra "Santo" em toda a Bíblia? De acordo com o Google, no livro de Levítico, a palavra Santo aparece 152 vezes. É o tema central deste livro. Pense nisso: você quer ser santo e espera que o caminho para alcançar a santidade seja fácil? Neste livro, Deus está dizendo que tipo de pessoa alguém deve se tornar para ser considerado santo. Mas Deus não diz que é impossível. Pelo contrário, ele diz: faça isso ou seja assim porque eu sou santo. Talvez não se trate de você se tornar santo, mas de você reconhecer a santidade de Deus; há uma necessidade de ser assim. Deus estava fisicamente vivendo entre eles no acampamento. O acampamento deveria ser um lugar santo, um local sagrado. Todos deveriam se submeter, ou então... Pensamos que Deus foi tão drástico, com palavras como "a pessoa deve ser eliminada", "morta", ou "detestável", "abominável" e muitas outras palavras que evitamos dizer porque Parece forte demais. Ah, sim, é forte. E deveria continuar sendo. Todas essas coisas foram estabelecidas dessa forma para torná-los uma nação santa. Uma nação que deveria saber como se comportar e tratar uns aos outros, eles tinham que ser diferentes de seus vizinhos; além disso, o Deus deles era assim, e a Sua palavra deveria ser considerada santa e digna de ser obedecida com temor. Deus queria que o Seu povo fosse como Ele, que fosse o Seu representante neste mundo; de que outra forma você sugeriria que fosse feito? E o Senhor sabia exatamente com quem estava lidando. Um povo obstinado. Você se vê de forma diferente? Eles tinham Deus no meio deles, na forma de uma coluna de fogo, e isso não os impediu de pecar contra o Senhor. Conhecer a lei e não obedecê-la, sim, isso te torna culpado, mas você ainda é culpado se não aprender a lei e não a obedecer, não é? Qualquer lei. Em qualquer lugar. A ignorância não te absolve da culpa. Este livro não apenas nos dá a lei, mas nos mostra, por meio dela, a seriedade da lei porque ela é Deus revelando-se a eles, a nós. Que tipo de Deus é este? Como Ele é diferente dos outros deuses pagãos? Isso é o básico da adoração a Deus: se eu não sei como Ele é, como posso agradá-Lo? Sim, eu sei, vivemos em uma era pós-moderna, sob a graça de Deus; no entanto, é o mesmo Deus. O Deus de Abraão, Isaque e Jacó, Davi e Daniel. É o mesmo Deus que escolheu se tornar homem e nos mostrar até onde Ele estava disposto a ir por nós. Ele nos ama, mesmo que sejamos tão obstinados quanto o Seu próprio povo; somos rebeldes, distorcemos a Sua palavra, amenizamos as coisas para que as pessoas não se ofendam com palavras como "exterminados e detestáveis". Ele não mudou. Ele ainda é o mesmo, a Sua Palavra ainda é a mesma e, no entanto, Ele prometeu que viria para nos dar uma Nova Aliança, uma na qual a lei seria guardada em nossos corações, e Ele seria o nosso Deus, e nós seríamos o Seu povo. Nós o matamos. Ele desceu voluntariamente. Porque isso Era o único caminho. Até onde você está disposto a ir por Ele? Não estou falando de missões; nossa primeira responsabilidade é conosco mesmos. Aprender a palavra de Deus, aproximar-se Dele, conhecê-Lo, significa compreender Seus padrões. É uma meta muito difícil, mas deve valer a pena, pois Ele promete a eternidade. Dizemos que fazemos parte do Seu povo, mas como isso pode ser verdade se evitamos compreender o básico? Desenhe o tipo de pessoa que Deus quer que sejamos. Você se surpreenderia, estamos tão perto de ser, se ao menos O conhecêssemos melhor. Jesus veio para cumprir a lei. O que isso significa? Não creio que Ele tenha dito que estaríamos isentos dela. Pelo contrário, o Espírito Santo veio para nos ajudar a ser o quê? Santos. Ele é o nosso ajudador para cumprir a lei. Sem Ele, é uma tarefa bastante difícil. Especialmente quando consideramos a explicação de Jesus no Sermão da Montanha. Jesus é o mesmo Deus; Ele apenas nos revelou o Seu coração. Entendo que são a mesma coisa  com a diferença que alcançar a santidade apenas pela lei é impossível; fica mais difícil depois da explicação de Jesus, mas então Ele prometeu um Ajudador. Aquele que plantaria a lei em nossos corações, como os profetas haviam escrito. Deus queria a lei em nossos corações, impressa ali; somente pela graça e poder do Espírito Santo podemos ser santos como Ele é santo. Ser santo significa ser diferente dos demais. Escolhemos viver seguindo a palavra de Deus. Toda a Palavra. Se você diz que faz parte do Seu povo, é melhor começar a agir como tal.
