Why fast? // Por que jejuar?

Why bother fasting?

Why should we fast? How does that help my life?

A devotional reflection on fasting and on the Sabbath required by God through the prophet Isaiah.

Opening Scripture

‘Why have we fasted,’ they say,

‘and you have not seen it?

Why have we humbled ourselves,

and you have not noticed?’ (Isaiah 58:3)

Devotional reading

Sometimes we just wonder, “Why pray, why fast? How many times have I done it? What were the answers that God has given me?” And all we want to say is: Why bother?

Instead, we should look at ourselves and search our ways. What kind of prayer? What kind of fasting have I been doing all along? In this chapter (Chapter 58), the LORD says through the prophet Isaiah the type of fasting He desires. He doesn’t want a fast that mostly pleases me, when I change nothing in my behavior and do nothing to show how repentant and penitent I am, and undeserving of His grace.

The LORD clearly states the type of fasting He wants. He wants a fast of action. Do something good for others. Something that will change the life of someone else. Maybe someone close to you or someone that you don’t know. He says: to loose the chains (action), to set free (action), to share your food (action), to provide shelter (action), to clothe someone (action), to not turn away from your own flesh and blood (action). The LORD doesn’t want a fast where you hide yourself. He wants us to do something, something for others. Everything about Christianity is about the other. The whole Bible is about how your relationship with God reflects on your relationship with others. You say you love the LORD but don’t do any good even to your flesh and blood; you are a liar. If you go about your way without even looking at the beggar, you are not living the love for God that you have been preaching. No wonder your prayers aren’t being answered.

When did they fast? They fasted in moments of desperation, intercession, and guidance, like in the book of Esther. For spiritual purity, divine revelation, and intercession, as it is written in the book of Daniel. David fasted for his son; he showed humility and submission to God’s will. Jesus fasted before the beginning of his ministry for spiritual discipline, to resist temptation.

Fasting isn’t just about food abstinence; it is also about what you are going to do with this day you have chosen to fast. Clean up, be well-presented as Jesus taught, and do something good for others. Go out and show some love; nobody needs to know that you are fasting.

Scripture Insight

Verse 8 - 9 says, “Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.” We are supposed to be the “hands” of God on earth. We are supposed to be stewards. Stewards are supposed to take care of God’s creation, and people, animals, and nature are part of it.

Then it continues, “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.

“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.” For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Reflection

He promises He will answer and take care of you. You do not just fast; do not forget to rest, either. The Sabbath is holy. The LORD won’t go easy on those who do whatever they want on His holy day. One thing is a day that we assemble; another thing is the Sabbath. The Bible describes the days of sacrifices, the feasts, and the Sabbaths. Six days you work, one day you rest. That is the command. God did no work on the Sabbath. He set an example. It is written on the second page of the Bible. The Sabbath is a command; fasting, on the other hand, is optional. We shouldn’t be choosing or making concessions on which command we should obey or not.

Usually, Christians mistake the day of assembly in the Church with the Sabbath. Yes, I guess you can do both in one day. But that it is not keeping the Sabbath. That is accommodating to our own schedule. I guess we can merge them; however, in my point of view, Sunday (if you are not able to keep the Sabbath as Holy) is to be taken as Holy, a day of rest. A day to rest your body and mind. To reset it for the coming week. If you do too many things, go to many places, meet too many people, cook too many meals. You are not exactly resting, are you? Our body needs rest. Real resting. Rest is different from worshipping. You worship with your actions, like you fast with your actions. Everything you say and do, do it for the glory of God in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. You should not consider worship only on Sundays when you go to church. We worship every day, all day long with everything we do and say. We know God is everywhere; we should not forget that and be reverent all the time.

Application

-Why and how do you fast? Is it how God wants?

-Reflect on the days of your week. Do you have a day off? What do you do?

-The LORD said through the prophet Isaiah, “Keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath, and from doing as you please on my holy day.” Stay at home, put your feet up, and read a book. Keep the Sabbath.

-When you fast, fast by doing what is right. Help the needy, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and keep the Sabbath. Be a good neighbor and a good family member.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to live in constant awareness of your presence. Help me to worship you not only at church but in my goings and in my comings and doings. Help me reflect your light on others through my actions. Refrain my tongue from grumbling and touch my heart with your compassion for the needy. Give me the boldness needed to leave my comfort zone and spend my time with them. Teach me to respect and keep the Sabbath, your Sabbath, as holy. In Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.

Pois a boca do Senhor falou.

Senhor, ensina-me a viver sempre consciente da Tua presença. Ensina-me a respeitar e a guardar o sábado — o Teu sábado — como santo. Em nome de Jesus Cristo. Amém.

I see Grace in the time of the Law // Eu vejo Graça no tempo da Lei

People frequently say that the Old Testament is the time of the law, and now we are under the Grace of God. Surprisingly, I just found out an explicit act of the Grace of God in the Old Testament. As I read chapter 9 of Deuteronomy , in which has a title Not because of Righteousness (ESV). I am stunned to see verses 4 - 6, they say: “ Do not say in your heart , after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘ It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. 5 Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.6 “Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving y...

The oppressive urge to speak // A necessidade opressiva de falar

Should I keep quiet forever? Is silence that bad? Can’t I stand my own thoughts that I need to say out loud? What kind of thoughts come to my mind? Are they generally good or bad? If I choose to speak up, to whom would it benefit? If anyone ever. Let me be clear: It is better not to say a word than say words that will do more harm than good. What if it is the truth? I ask, why would you say it? How would you say it? The truth will come out eventually. You don’t need to lie or be rude. What we must do is to be kind. If I tell you the truth in a harsh way, will you accept, or will you only hear the harsh sound of my voice and ignore completely what I was trying to say? Sometimes, not even the kindest words won’t make it through because the listener isn’t listening at all. The listener doesn’t care about your opinion, doesn’t care about others. The listener just cares about himself. The listener just wants to say w...

We are the Winners // Nós somos os vencedores

The death of my cousin made me think about a few things. Yes, it was a sad thing. So unexpected. It got us all by surprise, which hurt. He was such a nice, joyful, and lively guy or man. He will certainly be missed. What we have here but the present. My mom and my other cousin spoke at the funeral. Yes, we have nothing here. It makes no sense at all to get attached to things of this world when at any moment we might leave it. Our days are numbered, but we don’t know how many we were given. How are you living your days? Sometimes we take it for granted because we are young or have health and may think that we have a whole life ahead of us. But do we really? Some live their lives as if all they have to do is party. As if parties were the most important thing in the world. Fun is part of life, so are sadness, problems and relationships, and hard times. Are we going to take something from this world when we die? I am pretty sure we a...
