All we have is now //Tudo o que temos é aogra

You know that we don’t live yesterday, neither we know what is going to happen tomorrow. All we do have is today.

It seems like a secular saying, but it comes from the Bible, written a very long time ago. “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring” (Proverbs 27:1) We don’t know, we plan something and happens on the other way around, or something unexpected comes up!

We are allowed to make plans, in fact, it is written “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Proverbs 16:9); but you may ask what does it mean? How can God establish my steps? Or how can I be sure that was His plans, not mine? Or nothing is the way it is supposed to be.

I got you, my friend. For a long time, I troubled my mind trying to understand what that means. If God establishes my steps why bother to make any plan, right? I might just go with the flow.
Easy boy, not so fast in the conclusions.

People also have a hard time figuring out “what is that God wants for me?” I also had a hard time trying to understand that. How can I know that I am doing God’s will that everybody talks about.

In fact, God’s will is all over the bible. It is written in several ways. You know, you can choose whatever you want, since you follow what Jesus taught us to be. Be humble, be kind, consider others as more important than yourself, believe in Him, etc. All those things are God’s will. God wants us to be more like Jesus, and less like ourselves. Because we are a wretch. We are selfish, we are mean, we are proud and greedy, we might steal, we hate, we take offense too easily, we say that we are tolerant but we aren’t… if we keep going in our own understanding of things, we are always getting into trouble. But, if we follow Jesus’ steps, we might get close enough to God, and feel more peace, joy, and love.

So, we make plans, if we do with a humble, loving and kind heart, those plans will probably come true. But, if our plans are out of greed, selfishness, hate … God won’t bless you, and you won’t feel any joy or feelings of accomplishment; you will feel empty. Because we are happier when we please our Father that is in heaven. No matter what life brings to your door, but if you are following Jesus’ steps your life will never feel void. Because God’s love will fill your life.

So, yeah, we don’t know what life will bring for us tomorrow. It is better to be sure that God is our rock and foundation. That nothing good or bad will shake us. Your heart will be in the right place, your doings will be an example of Jesus’ doings. No reason to be afraid.

Of course, read your bible and find what are Jesus’ steps. Search your own heart if there are any jealousy, hate, envy, greed, adultery, idolatry, selfishness, or any bad thing that you might not consider as bad as the Bible sees, confess and repent. Change that. Only Jesus can help you with that. In your own effort, you won’t get rid of those bad things that you keep in your heart. But you must believe that He is the only one able to do it. Because He died for us so we can be set free of those things that imprison us, things that make us feel trapped in a vicious circle. He can break the circle.

All we have is today. Place your heart in the right position, towards God, and trust that your plans will be established by Him.

I see Grace in the time of the Law // Eu vejo Graça no tempo da Lei

People frequently say that the Old Testament is the time of the law, and now we are under the Grace of God. Surprisingly, I just found out an explicit act of the Grace of God in the Old Testament. As I read chapter 9 of Deuteronomy , in which has a title Not because of Righteousness (ESV). I am stunned to see verses 4 - 6, they say: “ Do not say in your heart , after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘ It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. 5 Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.6 “Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving y...

No "trouble-free" card for you // Nenhum cartão "livre-de-problemas" para você

The Word of the Lord is beautiful and true. In there, you find so many poems. This is the form the Bible authors chose to communicate the Word of the LORD, and it is profound. I’ve been listening to the Bible Project podcast for more than a year now. Lately, they are covering the theme of “The Wilderness”. Now, everywhere I read in the Scripture, I see something related to it. It is amazing. I am now in the book of the prophet Isaiah, chapter 43. And guess what? It is wonderful. Just in the first few verses, you find that God is telling His people that it doesn’t matter what sort of hardship they are going through, He, the Creator, will deliver them. Actually, it is said like this: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior....

The oppressive urge to speak // A necessidade opressiva de falar

Should I keep quiet forever? Is silence that bad? Can’t I stand my own thoughts that I need to say out loud? What kind of thoughts come to my mind? Are they generally good or bad? If I choose to speak up, to whom would it benefit? If anyone ever. Let me be clear: It is better not to say a word than say words that will do more harm than good. What if it is the truth? I ask, why would you say it? How would you say it? The truth will come out eventually. You don’t need to lie or be rude. What we must do is to be kind. If I tell you the truth in a harsh way, will you accept, or will you only hear the harsh sound of my voice and ignore completely what I was trying to say? Sometimes, not even the kindest words won’t make it through because the listener isn’t listening at all. The listener doesn’t care about your opinion, doesn’t care about others. The listener just cares about himself. The listener just wants to say w...
