Day 4: Sabbath Rest // Dia 4: Descanso sabático

The Jewish Sabbath is sacred to them. So you may think that Sabbath is a Jewish word it doesn't apply for us, Christians. However, what God meant by Sabbath, a day for resting, He wanted us, you and I, to rest and all the nature too. You can pick a Saturday or a Monday or a Sunday. But you and I need resting, so does the land and nature in general. God is the creator, the mastermind behind all that exists. Do you still think that resting isn't important? If the Creator said to rest, it is because he created the need for that, otherwise some consequences will come. If you work with not rest you will get sick, irritable and so many other characteristics that you know well; but the thing is, we are so self-absorbed that we think only we, humans, need resting. Not at all. God explicitly said to let the land rest, and the animals too. Do not go around thinking that you don't need a day (at least) every 7 days of resting. And some more after a year of work. That is why everybody needs some vacation, every year, so our land and animals.

Day Four: Sabbath Rest

Jeremiah prophesied that if the Israelites didn’t care for the land, they would be taken into bondage (Jeremiah 25).

This prophecy is fulfilled at the end of 2 Chronicles, in some of the final words that we read before the Babylonian captivity.

Christianity is both a very simple and almost impossibly difficult way of living our lives. It is simple as, at the heart of it, we are told to follow the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Christ. It is difficult for the same reasons.

One of the teachings that we can let slide in our modern lives is keeping the Sabbath day holy. There is just so much to do in our lives! With work and family and sport and the multitude of other things, it can be hard to find the time or to justify time for the Sabbath. It may be easier for us to fit in small pockets of time for God during the week instead …

God gave the law of the Sabbath year for the land in Exodus 23:10-11. It was quite straightforward: sow and harvest from the fields for six years, and let the land rest for the seventh. You can see here how this relates to the Commandment God gave humans for the seventh day of rest.

God was asking the Israelites to take care of this great gift that He had given them, this Promised Land, this incredible place. He asked them to let the land rest so that it could recover and recuperate and be restored.

The Israelites ignored this law from God. They continued to sow and harvest, and ultimately they were exiled from their land for seventy years. Exiled. Forced to leave their homes and be held captive by foreign rulers in a strange land.

The land got a nice, long rest in the end. But it seems that it would have been better for both the Israelites and the land that they lived in if they had listened to God in the first place.

Questions for Discussion

1. Why might the Israelites have ignored God’s command about the land?

2. Are the laws that God gave to the Israelites in the book of Exodus still relevant to us today?

3. How does God find ways of ensuring that His laws are kept?

My take on these stories // Minha opinião nessas histórias

The 2 Samuel 9 and 10 are about David’s kindness toward others. One person received his kindness humbly, knowing that wasn’t expected from that king in particular. Saul was the first king of Israel and did not obey the word of the LORD. Therefore, the kingdom was taken away from him and his lineage. God announced to Saul that he was going to give the kingdom to someone else. Being David. Because David was not a descendant of Saul, once he started reigning, it was expected that the new king, non-descendant of the former, would kill all the former king’s descendants so no one would stand in the line of succession. Bu David did not do that. Instead, he chose to show kindness toward the last person from Saul’s house.  Saul’s grandson accepted David’s kindness. And we have a beautiful story about grace.  Chapter 10, however, tells a different story. A story of a man who didn’t accept David’s kindness because that was what he was. A person who suspected everyone around him. He ...

Arise and eat // Levante e coma

He came to a broom bush, sat under it, and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough,  Lord ,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”   5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once, an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”   6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the  Lord  came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”   8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. (1 Kings 19: 4-8) How many times have you wished that this life were over? I have wished that many times. Sometimes it is just too painful, or sad, or hopeless, isn’t it? You know, Elijah...

Choose to be full of...// Escolha ser cheio de...

Can you choose to be   Joyful? (Full of joy) Peaceful? (full of peace) Patient? (full of patience) Kind? (full of kindness) Good? (full of goodness) Faithful? (full of faith) Gentle? (full of gentleness) Generous? (full of generosity) Self-controlled? (totally self-controlled) Can you choose to be like that all the time? To everyone?   What other religion would promise you that? I am not saying that all Christians are like that all the time. No, we are not, unfortunately. However, we are prone to be more successful than others, do you know why?  When Jesus was lifted to the heavens after his resurrection, he promised that a few days later, His Spirit would come to live in us. The Holy Spirit is our helper. When we live a godly life, a prayer life, and are filled with the Holy Spirit, those are the characteristics that should be seen in us—if not all of them, at least most of them.  Would you like to live like that? To treat people like that? Well, I suppose so. ...
