Happy Thanksgiving // Feliz dia de Ações de Graças

Feliz dia de Ações de Graças

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and here COVID is spreading faster than any gossip that the gossiper could ever imagine. So, everybody that I know is re-thinking about their plans or thinking very carefully if they are going to meet or not.

Despite that, in my opinion, this is not a case of not being grateful for this unexpected year. I know from some people this year couldn’t be worse. I know that domestic violence has increased, alcoholism too, depression, anxieties and so other many bad things happened.

However, the Bible teaches us to be thankful despite the circumstances (Philippians 4:10 – 13). How is that possible? Here is how it is possible: Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through him (Jesus) who strengthens me.

It is possible. We should start looking at the half-full cup of water instead of a half-empty cup of water. Did you get that? I mean we should not keep looking at the negative things that happened and try to find the good things. Look it carefully, you will find them. Even those people who got sick and didn’t die, and those families who were affected by violence and addictions, something has happened that it is a motive to give thanks to God.

We don’t know God’s plans, but I can assure you not even a leaf falls down without him knowing.

I give thanks to God for:

-              The nature had some rest this year.

-              In most part of the world the sky cleared.

-              Many rivers recovered and fish started coming back together with some birds.

-              Many families were forced to live together 24/7 and re-discover what is family really about.

-              Parents started taking care of their own children.

-              Many people learned how to enjoy the silence and stillness, instead of the hurry of the old days.

-              Many people learned to appreciate nature because they finally could hear it.

-              Others searched and found God in moments of despair and great sadness.

-              I am particularly thankful for the health and protection God provided to me, and my family and, my husband’s family.

-              I am thankful for the new friendships I made this year, and also for the protection God has provided for their health.

-              I am thankful for so many answered prayers.

Our plans maybe didn’t turn out to way we planned but the Bible also teaches that it is not our place to make them happen, but God’s. And His plans will always prevail over ours. Here is what the Bible says about this.

Proverbs 16:1, 9 – “1 The plans of the heart belong to man; but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. 9 The of man plan his way, but the LORD established his steps”. The whole chapter is about this.

There are more:

James 4:13-15

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”

Psalm 33:10

The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the plans of the peoples.

Proverbs 19:21

Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the Lord will stand.

Let us be thankful for we know that His plans are always right and just.

“Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip. For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our backs;  you let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water. Yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance”. Psalms 66: 8 – 12.

From this Psalm we notice that we go through bad days, so He can try us like silver. Meaning, He is making us better through experiences, hardships; his plans are always to make us better. We will go through different seasons throughout our lives, but He will not forsake us there.

“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his love endures forever”. Psalms 107:1

Salmos 107: 1

I see Grace in the time of the Law // Eu vejo Graça no tempo da Lei

People frequently say that the Old Testament is the time of the law, and now we are under the Grace of God. Surprisingly, I just found out an explicit act of the Grace of God in the Old Testament. As I read chapter 9 of Deuteronomy , in which has a title Not because of Righteousness (ESV). I am stunned to see verses 4 - 6, they say: “ Do not say in your heart , after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘ It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. 5 Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.6 “Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving y...

Doubts and fears leave us halfway // Dúvidas e medos nos deixam na metade do caminho

Despite all the sad news I got this week, we are still standing. I am in the Book of Joshua, in my annual Bible reading. There is a part in the book that is kind of boring. It is the distribution of the cities and borders. It is tempting to skip this part, but something that I heard from the guy from the Bible Project usually says, “it is wisdom literature”, or “meditation literature”. There is something important besides geographical information in these texts. And there is. Joshua 17:18c “though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out”. In the beginning of the book and several other parts too, the LORD says to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous”. What does that mean? What is this book really about? Well, the way I see it might not be the same way you see it. The way I see this book is about how we trust God and obey Him. Then we will see Him doing amazing things. It doesn’t matter how n...

How to Recognize Foolishness and Pursue Wisdom A devotional reflection on humility, discernment, and the cost of our choices Opening Scripture “Do not be wise in your own eyes.” — Proverbs 3:7 Devotional Reading A fool is not the same as an insane person. In my understanding, an insane person is unable to reason clearly; things may not make sense in their mind. A fool, however, is someone who rejects counsel, ignores warnings, disobeys what is right, and acts from wrong motivations. If a person does the wrong thing for the right reason, we may still be able to understand the motive. But foolishness is different: it is often rooted in ignorance, arrogance, and a narrow mind that refuses wisdom. How can we recognize a wise person? In my understanding, a wise person does not act impulsively. This person does not need to suffer through every mistake in order to learn, because wisdom can also come from observing the experiences of ot...
