...and the people did what was right in their own eyes // ...e as pessoas fizeram o que era certo aos seus próprios olhos

If I could say that I don’t like one book in the Bible, I would say it is the book of Judges. But I can’t say that. So, the book I like the least is Judges. However, there are precious teaching in there too, although it is a ruthless book. I don’t particularly like the last chapters. But every time I read, I try to get something good out of it. Why? Because it is in the Bible, so there must be a reason for it.

When I read these last chapters and reflect on this world that we live in today I see so much in common.

We see violence, we see very disturbing things going on and what it is worse is that the people are so used to it that nothing seems to bother them. And what before was abhorrent to everyone’s eyes, now it is not so much.

Two phrases that we see in the books of Judges and Kings and Chronicles that I think they are pretty much connected. 1. There was no king in Israel (in the book of Judges) and they did what was right in their own eyes. (Isn’t this what we see today?), the second phrase goes like this: and they did what was evil in the sight of the LORD (in the books of Kings and Chronicles).

With that in mind, think about it. No king meaning, not having any authority to enforce law, rules or anything. And everybody did pretty much what they wanted. (the dreaming place, right? We’ll see about that). And they did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. It is what people are doing today just like they did. If you read the book of Judges you will see that having no king or displeasing God won’t end well.

I think we can all agree that the world is different from what it used to be. It is different even from only 2 decades ago. Sometimes I can’t even recognize it. How do we deal with it? Every time we live more indoors. Everybody is somehow afraid of everybody, it can be COVID, racism, just pure evil and violence, guns, drugs, deceitfulness, lies, etc) we can’t just trust anyone. It is hard to make new friends personally. We can have a thousand on Facebook or Instagram. But do we really know all these people? How many of them came to your house last year? Have you been to any of their birthday party? Can you imagine if we got invited to each one of our “friends” on Facebook to their birthday party? Nobody would be ever sober or have any money left. But that is not the point. The point is that we rather “know” a person virtually than personally. Our kids don’t play on the streets anymore, too much violence. The first question a parent does is, “Who’s that kid? Whose does he belong to? Where does he live?” I am not saying that is wrong, but I doubt that was the question my mom did when I brought someone new at home when I was a kid.

This is the reflection of the “everyone does whatever they think is right” sort of thing. The law doesn’t mean much. Trust is not easy, because I don’t know what people think, or respect anymore. They don’t hold anything as true. Everyone has their own truth. How is that truth to start with? People don’t respect each other, although they preach tolerance. People want peace but they don’t believe in reinforcing the law or policing.

I think people are confused. They don’t know what to think or believe anymore. Everything is right but nothing brings comfort. We live in prisons, afraid of everyone. We have anxieties, depression, and loneliness, and we don’t know how to remedy them. All these came along because of the so-called freedom. Everyone needs to do whatever they want, and the result of this is what we call modern society.

When there is no “king” and people do whatever they think is right, the people are not safe nor happy or live in peace.

Nobody wants a God who has rules and commandments. When people, in the past, looked for God, societies were safer and less violent, people used to trust each other more, and kids used to play on the streets. The laws were made for the whole, not for a group of people.

Our society became ghettos that fight each for more rights because they deserve, they always deserve more. And someone is always wrong.

King Solomon said, “There is nothing new under the sun”. All this we are living was already lived in another time. The result is always the same. War, chaos, death.

Those who read the Bible know what is coming.

A quem ele pertence? Onde ele mora?"

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the Word of God to be more acceptable and palatab

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost you
