Mama bear kind of God // Deus tipo Mamãe Urso

We used to say that we do our laundry at home, right? I mean, our problems we solve among four walls. No outsider needs to hear what is going on inside our family, as an example.

Another thing that came to mind was, have you seen or heard how dangerous it is to face a mama bear with her cubs? No kidding. If she feels threatened by you, or feels that you impose a risk to her cubs, start making your prayers because you are about to meet your Creator.  Even though God protects his people, that is not an excuse to get a guilt-free card.

In the family of God, that happens too. When we read the Bible, we notice that His people, or should I say humans, have always rebelled against God. How? Well, the main way to rebel against God is not trusting His Word. His Word is sacred, true, and worthy.

During the way to the promised land, the people of Israel, all of them, I mean most of them, have rebelled against God more than once. God patiently (I mean, there were times that his patience ran thin) had taught them more than once that they could trust Him. Many people died because of rebellions. They suffered the consequences of their own acts, their own choices. God dealt with them internally.

One time, they were camped outside Moab, and the king got scared. With all the reasons, there were too many people, at least half a million people, able to fight. Well, the king sought a seer to curse the people of Israel. But what he didn’t realized that the seer answered to the same God as the people of Israel, and of course, he couldn’t curse them. One time, he sent a word to the king of Moab saying:

“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?)(…)

“No misfortune is seen in Jacob, no misery observed in Israel, The LORD their God is with them”(…) (Numbers 23: 19-21)

The people had their problems with God. They rebelled a lot. All the time. They were professional grumblers. Despite that, God had not abandoned them. An outsider wanted to do evil, but God was with them. The outsiders can try whatever they want, but if God is for us, who can be against us? Apostle Paul once said. We are under the wings of the King of the Universe. Who can come trying to harm us, when the LORD is our shield?

The people of Israel had their share of disobedience and rebellions; God showed them what the costs are to be called His people. You do your part, and God does His. Make no mistake, you will bear the consequences of your choices. But our enemy cannot harm us. God does not lie.

He showed how much He loves us by going to the last consequence of love, which is dying for us. Can you die for someone? Would you run in front of a car to save a person, a child?

Would you do that to the person who tried over and over to harm you? It is a hard decision. Would you send your son to die for your enemy? To save your enemy from hanging?

If it were not for Jesus, we would all be condemned already. We cannot live up to God’s standards. God gave them the law so they could see they didn’t stand a chance of obeying it all. They, as well as we, would fall short in obeying God’s standards. A life for a life. That is the fair price. We look to the law to be aware that we need something else; we need someone else. Someone who can help us to get closer to God. His love for us didn’t change. We didn’t change either. What then? Jesus came and changed everything for us. He, God in person, came to pay the price, so we could approach the throne of God. Otherwise, we all would be condemned.

That is why we say that people who reject Christ are condemned. We do not condemn them. It is just because without Christ, no one stands a chance in front of God.

Have a good Lenten reflection on this.

A Sua Palavra é sagrada, verdadeira e digna.

O apóstolo Paulo disse certa vez: “Estamos sob as asas do Rei do Universo.

Arise and eat // Levante e coma

He came to a broom bush, sat under it, and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough,  Lord ,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”   5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once, an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”   6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the  Lord  came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”   8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. (1 Kings 19: 4-8) How many times have you wished that this life were over? I have wished that many times. Sometimes it is just too painful, or sad, or hopeless, isn’t it? You know, Elijah...

Solitude and Silence // Solidão e silêncio

In moments of peace and tranquility, it is useful to remember times of stress and struggle by Thomas à Kempis Whenever you are enjoying some time of peace and rest, it is useful to call to mind those times when you have been busy, overworked, or stressed. Whenever you are enjoying the calmness of solitude and silence, it is useful to reflect on those occasions when you have been assaulted with noise and activity. Indeed, calling such things to mind is a sure and effective way of learning to love and value the peaceful tranquility of your times of solitude! If you reflect upon how easily you can become anxious or worried, or how little it takes to perturb your soul, you will also realize that the achievement of true inner peace is not something which human efforts can ever achieve on their own. Left to yourself, how often you have fallen prey to anxiety, even when there is little or no real need to worry! How often, even when you are surro...

We are the Winners // Nós somos os vencedores

The death of my cousin made me think about a few things. Yes, it was a sad thing. So unexpected. It got us all by surprise, which hurt. He was such a nice, joyful, and lively guy or man. He will certainly be missed. What we have here but the present. My mom and my other cousin spoke at the funeral. Yes, we have nothing here. It makes no sense at all to get attached to things of this world when at any moment we might leave it. Our days are numbered, but we don’t know how many we were given. How are you living your days? Sometimes we take it for granted because we are young or have health and may think that we have a whole life ahead of us. But do we really? Some live their lives as if all they have to do is party. As if parties were the most important thing in the world. Fun is part of life, so are sadness, problems and relationships, and hard times. Are we going to take something from this world when we die? I am pretty sure we a...
