An observation about vanity //Uma observação sobre vaidade

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1: 27)

“And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this way was my reward for all my toil. Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after the wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 2:10-11)

The culture of self lately has destroyed so many lives. Self-indulgence is at the top of the list. Solomon indulged himself in everything we can possibly imagine (the guy was loaded, so he could do whatever… he had 1000 women.. to say the least), and yet he couldn’t find the point. He concluded it is chasing after the wind. Meaning, you won’t get anywhere by self-indulging. I would say people have mistaken self-indulgence for happiness. The “I do whatever I want to” doesn’t bring happiness.

I am appalled by how some people have taken seriously the business of vanity. You see, the devil is a liar, Jesus himself said so. God doesn’t make mistakes. All creation is good, God said so. Look around. The diversity of natural, beautiful things that He made for us. Even ourselves.

The devil has planted in the hearts of so many people lies; lies about themselves. When they look at the mirror the devil whispers in their ear: “You are ugly. You are old… look at all these wrinkles. You don’t belong in this body.” And the lies create roots in their minds and hearts to the point that they truly believe in them. Then they go ahead to undo what God has done, thinking they will find happiness, approval, and peace of mind.

Do you really think you can do better than God? That any other human being can “fix” your “imperfections? Your aging?

Sorry to break it to you but, you are getting old no matter how hard you try.

Shouldn’t we be worried about other things? Like broken relationships, education, salvation… anyway… there are so much out there, outside our own self.

The lack of joy starts when we first give ear to the lies of the devil.

Look, God created you in his own image. How can it be that suddenly God has made something ugly? Something wrong? God is perfection. God put everything together, and would he make a mistake with the only creation He made in his own image?

You don’t need that surgery, that filling, or whatever they call. You need to say no to the devil.

Cast him out. Feel the joy of being the God’s image. We are all different. We all have different purposes. Why do you want to please people? You are never going to please them all. The only one we should be worrying about pleasing is God. He is the only one worthy of all praise and glory and honor.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Can’t you see? We are supposed to get old (time to be born and time to die); we are supposed to go through some tough moments (there is time to heal, time to weep, time to laugh).

We are not supposed to be laughing all the time. We are not supposed to be crying all the time. So, you might ask “What’s wrong with me?” I don’t know, just look around you. What are you missing? The gratitude, the blessings… what are they? Where are they? They are right there next to you. You might be looking in the wrong direction. You might be comparing yourself with others, but there is no comparison to be made of. You are unique. There is only one of you in the world. The comparison doesn’t work that way.

“Fixing” your appearance, your home address, or your job won’t change the way you feel about yourself as long as you still believe in the devil’s lies. They are lies. They have no foundations.

You were born in the right body, with the right family, at the right time. God doesn’t make mistakes. We do.

(Eclesiastes 2:10-11)

Algo errado? Deus é a perfeição.

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...
