Change of heart // Mudança de ideia

“And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles”. *Matthew 5:41.

Let’s rest our thoughts on this for a minute.

We live in a selfish and egocentric culture. It is widespread. Who in this world would go one mile extra? What is the purpose of that?

We can think about many things.

Jesus was talking about retaliation, an eye for an eye kind of thing. When we learn that at first seems fair. If you break my leg, I’ll break yours. Right? Fair. Someone has to pay the price. And nothing fairer than the same price. I agree.

However, God’s way of seeing justice is very different. Why? Because He is a merciful and patient God.

When we don’t retaliate, when we show mercy and forgiveness, it causes something different in people’s hearts. They don’t understand why show mercy.

We don’t understand so much evil and crimes and violence in the world. It seems that the good guys are losing badly. I also get that feeling sometimes. It all seems hopeless.

But God sees everything. He is patient and merciful.

Let me open a parenthesis here. Maybe you don’t know what mercy is. Mercy is the act of withholding deserved punishment, while grace is the act of endowing unmerited favor.

Why such a powerful God would be merciful? It is in his power to punish, to end all evil. Yes, He’ll do that in due time. But until then, He is waiting for the change of heart that mercy provokes.

See… all humans deserve death. We are all bad. It is so much easier to be bad than to be good. Being good … dude … we have to really put an effort into it. But being bad just comes naturally.

Because we are naturally evil. But God promised that He wouldn’t destroy the world again, but he would judge accordingly. Although one of his attributes is merciful and gracious.

God not only waits for your change of heart but he also gives you a lot of gifts when you decide to change. He delivers you from hell and gives you heaven. What other God in this world has these attributes?

So, to go the extra mile is like… “You force me to go one mile, and just because of that I’ll go two, but you can’t complain that I’ll talk a lot about who taught me that”.

What would be the other situation? Hmm.. example: your boss demands you X-thing to do for the next day when the next day comes, you give him X+Y thing. You didn’t need to do that, but you did, not with a hidden agenda, but from the heart. Your heart will reach his heart eventually.

Mercy is powerful and changes people.

Jesus taught not an eye for an eye, but an eye for a heart. That is all that matters.

A little change of heart.

Mercy, kindness, love, patience, joy, and so many more good things come when we are not self-centered. It creates a virtuous cycle.

The book of Jonah is about God’s mercy. And Jonah shows exactly what we do when we don’t understand it, when we don’t want it. Because sometimes we want an eye for an eye, and God gives mercy. It does not seem fair. But God wants the change of heart. We all must have the chance.

Deixe-me abrir um parêntese aqui.

Qual seria a outra situação?

A misericórdia é poderosa e muda as pessoas.

My take on these stories // Minha opinião nessas histórias

The 2 Samuel 9 and 10 are about David’s kindness toward others. One person received his kindness humbly, knowing that wasn’t expected from that king in particular. Saul was the first king of Israel and did not obey the word of the LORD. Therefore, the kingdom was taken away from him and his lineage. God announced to Saul that he was going to give the kingdom to someone else. Being David. Because David was not a descendant of Saul, once he started reigning, it was expected that the new king, non-descendant of the former, would kill all the former king’s descendants so no one would stand in the line of succession. Bu David did not do that. Instead, he chose to show kindness toward the last person from Saul’s house.  Saul’s grandson accepted David’s kindness. And we have a beautiful story about grace.  Chapter 10, however, tells a different story. A story of a man who didn’t accept David’s kindness because that was what he was. A person who suspected everyone around him. He ...

Arise and eat // Levante e coma

He came to a broom bush, sat under it, and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough,  Lord ,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”   5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once, an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”   6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the  Lord  came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”   8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. (1 Kings 19: 4-8) How many times have you wished that this life were over? I have wished that many times. Sometimes it is just too painful, or sad, or hopeless, isn’t it? You know, Elijah...

Choose to be full of...// Escolha ser cheio de...

Can you choose to be   Joyful? (Full of joy) Peaceful? (full of peace) Patient? (full of patience) Kind? (full of kindness) Good? (full of goodness) Faithful? (full of faith) Gentle? (full of gentleness) Generous? (full of generosity) Self-controlled? (totally self-controlled) Can you choose to be like that all the time? To everyone?   What other religion would promise you that? I am not saying that all Christians are like that all the time. No, we are not, unfortunately. However, we are prone to be more successful than others, do you know why?  When Jesus was lifted to the heavens after his resurrection, he promised that a few days later, His Spirit would come to live in us. The Holy Spirit is our helper. When we live a godly life, a prayer life, and are filled with the Holy Spirit, those are the characteristics that should be seen in us—if not all of them, at least most of them.  Would you like to live like that? To treat people like that? Well, I suppose so. ...
