Is Halloween for Christians? // Halloween é para os cristãos?

You know, in Brazil, we do not have in our culture Halloween. However, we have the Day of the Dead on November 2nd. But I have never been in a cemetery if a person wasn’t in a casket waiting to be buried. And I have never visited any grave. I know many cultures people go to the cemetery to talk to the grave or just leave flowers.

I have an opinion about that, but I’ll keep it to myself for now.

It has been a few years since Halloween became a thing in Brazil. It doesn’t seem right.  I don’t know what people do over there if they just go to parties wearing costumes or do something else.

According to the History Channel website:

This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort during the long, dark winter.

Druids built huge sacred bonfires to commemorate the event, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes.”

Christians have another kind of ritual that involves resurrection and life. God clearly condemned the cult of the dead, necromancy, divination, and all these kinds of stuff.

My point here is, Should Christians engage in any capacity in Halloween? I think not.

“Ohhh, it is just a costume.” “They are kids”. “It is just a game”. “It is just a movie”. Nothing in this world is there by chance. Everything has an agenda. The devil has an agenda. You can give whatever excuse you want to ease your mind. But remember what our agenda in this world is.

Still, I don’t think Christians should be part of or imitate these parties. It is just too pagan to let it slide.

We Christians should be teaching about the Light of the World, that is, Jesus. He commanded us to be light, not be part of the darkness or lighting bonfires to the dead, and do the same things the world does. We are supposed to be different. Awkwardly different, abhorrent different, hated, discriminated, persecuted because we can’t be part of the same things as the pagans.

Too harsh?

I am not sorry at all.

Jesus died for us and resurrected for us. He didn’t do any accord with the devil. We know that the world of the dead doesn’t get mixed with the world of the living. We know that there are no such things as ghosts but demons. We are not to participate in anything with them. Our God is the One who holds the Universe together, owner of the sun and the moon, He is the Creator. He created the day and the night. Sin came to the world through disobedience, bringing with it death as its wage. We fight sin.

What are you teaching your kids about Halloween? Are you telling them that Wiccans and witches are doing sorceries around the world? That they serve our enemy. They deny Jesus Christ.

We have no time to play around; the devil isn’t playing around. We ought to make a stand about what we are and whom we serve. “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14.

In Matthew 5: 13-16, Jesus said:

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Who is going to make a stand? If not now, when? We have to take every opportunity to teach the gospel, to witness.

1 Peter 5: 8 - 11

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of suffering. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast. 11 To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.

Ele criou o dia e a noite.

14 “Você é a luz do mundo.

  1. Christian=Who follows Christ. Christ is the way, the truth, and the LIFE. Then, if a Christian -that follows who is the LIFE- celebrates even as a "silly game" the death, is an oxymoron, a contradiction in the terms. A Christian that cellebrates death is a Christian that needs to review to whom pledges allegiance.

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the Word of God to be more acceptable and palatab

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost you

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe
