The foreknowledge of God // A presciência de Deus

Wild Aware Utah | Crows and Ravens

Just because I like crows and I praise God when I see them.

The foreknowledge of God (by Saint Thomas Aquinas)

In God, there is another perfection. He foresees with prudence all future things, good or bad. Before they happen, He knows them and sees the good of the evil that will result from them.

God foresaw the fall of the angel Lucifer and that of the first man. He permitted temptation; He knew in advance all the evil that would result from it for the human race, and also all the good – that is to say, the Incarnation of the Son of God, by which man receives a glory even greater than that which he had before the Fall.

Our own foresight

Let us also foresee all our doings, our words, our desires, our works, and let us consider the good and the evil that may result for us from them, as well as the scandal or edification that others will receive from them. Likewise, let us ponder beforehand the temptations that will perhaps arise from demons or from men, from our friends according to the flesh or according to the spirit, and how we should resist them, endure them, or flee them. For expected darts wound us less severely.

We must also foresee what will happen at the moment of the separation of our soul from our body, the sufferings of our body, the anguish of our soul, and the greatness of the peril, and likewise where we shall dwell, with God or with the Devil, in Heaven or in Hell.

It is useful for us to keep in mind the great joy of those who dwell with God and the tremendous misery of those who have departed from Him. So Moses desired: “Oh that they would be wise and would understand, and would provide for their last end”. (Deut.32:29.

I am reading this booklet called The ways of God for meditation and prayer attributed to Saint Thomas Aquinas. Good things to think about.

Another thing that I read today from a C.S. Lewis’ book called reflections on the Psalms. There is one chapter called A Word about Praising that really got me thinking. Praise the Lord, what exactly does that mean? How do I praise the Lord? Is there a method, and what is the correct way? I am a person with no visible gift. I mean, I don’t have a good voice to sing, no gift for playing an instrument, art… Praise the Lord, if I can get a straight line on a paper. I am no painter…

So in summary, I have no idea how I should praise the Lord since I can’t see how I should praise the Lord. C.S. Lewis says that we can praise the Lord by admiring His creation and sharing the good things that happen to us. My conclusion was that I can praise the Lord singing along in the church or by myself at home, I can praise the Lord admiring art, all sorts of art, because God gave those people the gift of making art. God gave the singers the gift of a good voice, I hope you got the point.

So, while I was thinking about the ways to praise the Lord, I realized that when we travel in Europe and enter in all those beautiful churches, with so many arts all around. I thought, I can praise the Lord right there. Not only did God gift those artists to paint, but who knows if those paintings were their ways of praising the Lord. God might have shown them those beautiful things like He showed Moses how to build the ark and the tabernacle.

Every person can praise the Lord with whatever God has given him, even if the person doesn’t know (like me) how or where, or when. Know that you and I can praise the Lord for the wind that relieves the heat in the summer, the sun that heats during the winter, admiring the beauty and perfection of the birds, their songs. When we read the psalms, there are so many of them praising the Lord for His glory. And what is his glory? All creation, we are His glory—the perfection with which He made everything.

Better to praise the Lord than talk about people, politics, and disasters. This way, we can be reminded that He has control of everything.

Deus previu a queda do anjo Lúcifer e a do primeiro homem.

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...

Choose to be full of...// Escolha ser cheio de...

Can you choose to be   Joyful? (Full of joy) Peaceful? (full of peace) Patient? (full of patience) Kind? (full of kindness) Good? (full of goodness) Faithful? (full of faith) Gentle? (full of gentleness) Generous? (full of generosity) Self-controlled? (totally self-controlled) Can you choose to be like that all the time? To everyone?   What other religion would promise you that? I am not saying that all Christians are like that all the time. No, we are not, unfortunately. However, we are prone to be more successful than others, do you know why?  When Jesus was lifted to the heavens after his resurrection, he promised that a few days later, His Spirit would come to live in us. The Holy Spirit is our helper. When we live a godly life, a prayer life, and are filled with the Holy Spirit, those are the characteristics that should be seen in us—if not all of them, at least most of them.  Would you like to live like that? To treat people like that? Well, I suppose so. ...
