About the Pandemic season // Sobre a temporada de Pandemia

CNN picture

Well, we are living in a pandemic season. So, people start questioning why, how, who… often they try to find a guilty part in this as if it was solve anything. But in the Bible, we learn something different. As I was reading the text of my favorite bible study, I picked some very interesting sentences. I will use it here and, in no way, I am trying to say that they are my words. Yes, I am again copying and pasting here. Why? Because some things are so good that I cannot keep them to myself. I need to share.

“Paul said in Ephesians (5: 15 – 17) that we must live wisely, understanding the nature of life (the days are evil), the nature of our opportunities, and the nature of God’s will. He is pointing out to us that evil times create opportunities for good. We must make the most of those opportunities created by evil days”. That is exactly what I am trying to say since this pandemic situation began. People don’t want to see that it might have taken some lives (a lot of lives) but it also is saving many more. How? It is delaying the climate changes worsening; the clearing in the air pollution has saved already more the 50 000 lives of premature death because of respiratory complications (link); many waters (link) have been cleared and fish have returned (video). People are getting to spend more time with their family that otherwise they would be crazy working so many hours/week that they barely see their kids growing up.

“That’s a far cry from the outlook, many Christians have toward evil days! Most of us see evil days as obstacles, as times of withdrawal and defeat. The wise Christian knows how to take advantage of evil times in order to the agenda of God’s kingdom. If you are under pressure, make the most of that time by manifesting the overcoming grace of God. Live with understanding and buy up the opportunity.”

People usually have a hard time to think that God could let so many good people die in so unfair ways, that they let their faith be shaken. If you cannot accept that God is big enough to have even under pandemic season under control, you must reevaluate your faith foundation.
Because God is good, and He sees everything, He holds the universe in his hands, how come the pandemic would not be under His control? Not one leaf falls from the tree that God doesn’t know about, imagine a human life! Or you don’t know that He foresaw all of this since the beginning? “Remember that in every situation of our lives we are to act in reliance upon the Word of God. Acting in faith means to adopt God’s evaluation of what the great values of life are. Acting in faith means to reject the success image that the world is constantly holding before us, and to seek the riches of Christ rather than the riches of this world. Acting in faith means that we apply Christian principles to our business relationships, our family relationships, and all the other relationships of our lives. We are to live by faith and live wisely, understanding the evil nature of the world, and understanding the will of God for our lives”, which is to please Him with faith, believing what He is and what He has done for us.

Speaking yet about the quarantine mode that most countries are on, and we have seen in many parts some authorities are having problems keeping people to stay at home. “The writer of Hebrews says: “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it (Hebrews 12:11) God has a purpose in all that happens in our lives. Therefore, we should give thanks in all things.”

That is much what I wanted to say about this season that the world is going through. It is also a Christian principle to obey the authorities. So, let’s be wise. The cases in China has already been slowing down, and they are known for being obedient (willingly or not). The sooner people get inside, the sooner this pandemic will meet its end.

I see Grace in the time of the Law // Eu vejo Graça no tempo da Lei

People frequently say that the Old Testament is the time of the law, and now we are under the Grace of God. Surprisingly, I just found out an explicit act of the Grace of God in the Old Testament. As I read chapter 9 of Deuteronomy , in which has a title Not because of Righteousness (ESV). I am stunned to see verses 4 - 6, they say: “ Do not say in your heart , after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘ It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. 5 Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.6 “Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving y...

No "trouble-free" card for you // Nenhum cartão "livre-de-problemas" para você

The Word of the Lord is beautiful and true. In there, you find so many poems. This is the form the Bible authors chose to communicate the Word of the LORD, and it is profound. I’ve been listening to the Bible Project podcast for more than a year now. Lately, they are covering the theme of “The Wilderness”. Now, everywhere I read in the Scripture, I see something related to it. It is amazing. I am now in the book of the prophet Isaiah, chapter 43. And guess what? It is wonderful. Just in the first few verses, you find that God is telling His people that it doesn’t matter what sort of hardship they are going through, He, the Creator, will deliver them. Actually, it is said like this: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior....

The oppressive urge to speak // A necessidade opressiva de falar

Should I keep quiet forever? Is silence that bad? Can’t I stand my own thoughts that I need to say out loud? What kind of thoughts come to my mind? Are they generally good or bad? If I choose to speak up, to whom would it benefit? If anyone ever. Let me be clear: It is better not to say a word than say words that will do more harm than good. What if it is the truth? I ask, why would you say it? How would you say it? The truth will come out eventually. You don’t need to lie or be rude. What we must do is to be kind. If I tell you the truth in a harsh way, will you accept, or will you only hear the harsh sound of my voice and ignore completely what I was trying to say? Sometimes, not even the kindest words won’t make it through because the listener isn’t listening at all. The listener doesn’t care about your opinion, doesn’t care about others. The listener just cares about himself. The listener just wants to say w...
