Be gentle with the ignorant // Seja gentil com o ignorante

Three things stood out for me in today’s bible study. I didn’t comment with the women, I don’t know why… but that doesn’t matter.

First thing was in Hebrews 5:2 says, “He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward since himself is beset with weakness”. What is so special about this verse?  To deal gently with the ignorant. That was a punch in my face. I have always asking God to forgive me for my arrogance, although not always I realize that I have been arrogant. Most people wouldn’t say that I am. But I know I can be sometimes. But since I don’t often realize that, I need to ask God to be humble and forgive my arrogance. I don’t feel myself better than anyone, not consciously anyway, but I don’t have too much patience with the ignorant or with the fools. I thank God to make me realize that now. Being aware of our sins is important, so we can be watchful to when we sin and immediately ask for forgiveness and try to change our behavior face to the fact.

So, I ask God to teach me to deal gently with the ignorant and also to acknowledge my own weaknesses.

The second thing that stood out for me this morning is written Hebrews 5:8, “Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered”. People, I included, often complain about the hardships of life. But what we do not realize is that God is calling us to obedience through suffering just like Jesus. He obeyed the Father to the end. Of course, He did not want to die, he knew the pain He would have to endure, but it was for the greater good. It was for our salvation. Yet, despite the pain, he obeyed. He was perfect because he went through the whole plan God had designed. We also must learn obedience through suffering. So, now every time I find myself in suffering, I will understand that God wants me to obey, and I will search in what He is calling me to obey. We sometimes have this feeling we are stuck in some phase of life and cannot get passed that, because we keep repeating our mistakes over and over. But if we think that God wants us to choose the narrow path, the hardest one, we will find peace and victory.

And that brings me to the third point of this morning: Hebrews 5:13 - 14 “for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

What is the word of righteousness? It is the Word of God. The whole Scripture. The more we know, the more we acknowledge our need to know even more. The Word of God never tires anybody. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you will never get tired of the Bible. But the thing about knowledge is that it is totally different from discernment. Discernment is to have the right mind, to judge correctly good from evil. If you know the Word of God and practice it, you will be mature to discern. It takes practice to acquire discernment. It does not come easily. We must obey, trust, and believe. Obedience comes before believing. We must obey, because when we obey, so we can believe and trust. Choosing the narrow path every day, it is a way of discerning.

So, the lessons today were to be gentle with the ignorant and also ask God for the ability to discern good from evil. And when we discern that, that our heart may be ready to obey. BE aware that obedience often comes through suffering. Every hardship we go through, it is a lesson to be learned and obeyed.

Let us search in our heart, through this hard season that the whole world is now, where are we falling short before God? How can we be gentler and more obedient to God? What are my sins that I do not recognize them as such?

Lord have mercy on me, because I, myself, am ignorant of my own sins, show me my weaknesses. Help me to discern good from evil in my thoughts, words, and actions today and every day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Toda a Escritura.

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...
