Worth it // Vale a pena

How do you communicate Christianity? What is the first word that comes to mind when you think about Jesus? What was his goal on earth? Think about that for a minute, or as long as you need it.

Now, a personal question if you consider yourself a Christian. How do you communicate Christianity with people? How are you showing it?
A reasonable person would easily say – through love, of course.
Yes, that is right. But are you sure that is exactly that way you are showing it?
Is it easy to show love and actually love everybody that you encounter throughout the day, every day?

I remember when I first got to Sao Paulo, I noticed that if you are a smiling person, you would be misread all the time. The people in Sao Paulo are simply not used to smiling people. They will think a ton of things about you, and never imagine that is your way of being, not at first at least. My friend used to be a smiling kind of person. Then, people in her work started thinking that she was flirting to everyone. I told her that she shouldn’t be smiling all the time. She got a little upset about that, but she figured it out with time. Yeah, she and I were from the same region of Brazil, and people from Northeast has this habit of smiling.

Smile is a way to communicate that you empathize with people, but not in a flirting way.

My point here is: how are you demonstrating that Christ lives in you to other people?

When there is light, the dark cannot exist. Jesus said ‘you are the light of the world’, are you enlightening the places wherever you go? Do you bring with you joy, peace, fun, love? Or you are so busy that you do not even notice people around you? Or you are suffocated by your problems? Jesus can and will take care of your problems if you let him. But, if you are always worried about things, you aren’t showing the Christianity you are supposed to. You are showing the darkness of your soul.

Jesus said, ‘you are the salt of the earth’, buddy, you are supposed to make a good difference around you. Food without salt has no flavor, no matter how many spices you put in will cover the lack of salt. We are to bring joy, fun, peace to everyone because Christ is in us.

Have you ever thought about why wherever Jesus went there were always a bunch of people following him? Because he was making a difference in their lives. Jesus was the true salt; everybody wanted a little. The joy that might come out from him, I imagine that was exhilarating. Are people coming towards you or they are going away from you? This could be a very good indicator of how much Christianity you are showing.

Jesus said, ‘in the world, you will have troubles, but don’t worry, I overcame it’. So, if He overcame the troubles, problems and He lives in you, consequently, you have also overcome.

My darling, it isn’t easy to love. He died for us because He loved us. He was persecuted so we are persecuted too. He resurrected, so we will be too. His life and our lives should match. What he did, we should be able to do it also. He came to set an example for us.

How far have we matched our lives to his life? The first step is to love, the rest will come easily. Because this is the foundation of our faith. To Love. Love your God above all else and love your neighbor as yourself.

Solitude and Silence // Solidão e silêncio

In moments of peace and tranquility, it is useful to remember times of stress and struggle by Thomas à Kempis Whenever you are enjoying some time of peace and rest, it is useful to call to mind those times when you have been busy, overworked, or stressed. Whenever you are enjoying the calmness of solitude and silence, it is useful to reflect on those occasions when you have been assaulted with noise and activity. Indeed, calling such things to mind is a sure and effective way of learning to love and value the peaceful tranquility of your times of solitude! If you reflect upon how easily you can become anxious or worried, or how little it takes to perturb your soul, you will also realize that the achievement of true inner peace is not something which human efforts can ever achieve on their own. Left to yourself, how often you have fallen prey to anxiety, even when there is little or no real need to worry! How often, even when you are surro...

We are the Winners // Nós somos os vencedores

The death of my cousin made me think about a few things. Yes, it was a sad thing. So unexpected. It got us all by surprise, which hurt. He was such a nice, joyful, and lively guy or man. He will certainly be missed. What we have here but the present. My mom and my other cousin spoke at the funeral. Yes, we have nothing here. It makes no sense at all to get attached to things of this world when at any moment we might leave it. Our days are numbered, but we don’t know how many we were given. How are you living your days? Sometimes we take it for granted because we are young or have health and may think that we have a whole life ahead of us. But do we really? Some live their lives as if all they have to do is party. As if parties were the most important thing in the world. Fun is part of life, so are sadness, problems and relationships, and hard times. Are we going to take something from this world when we die? I am pretty sure we a...

Tear them down // Destrua-os

I like Gideon’s story because I used to use it to justify my lack of faith. Although if I had seen an angel, I probably wouldn’t doubt it. But when hard times come, we tend to be more skeptic because our mindset is: “If the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us?” ( Judges 6 :13) Isn’t that right? However, we usually forget our sins. The idols we have put in our lives, our disobedience. We certainly are not praying as much as we should; we have let other things become a priority. It is not like God is punishing us, they might as well be simply the consequences of our disobedience. Then when God decided to help, He wants to know what is in our heart. So, He demands to tear down all our idols. Are you willing to do that? Your job, your career, your friends, your family, your bank account, your health, the food, the entertainment, and so on.   Make God priority again. Yes, you doubt because you think all your priority was...
