Religiosity // Religiosidade

I checked online the meaning of religiosity. From Cambridge Dictionary it says, “religiosity means – the quality of being very religious, or reminding you of religious behavior, often in a way that is annoying”(link). And I found in another site (link) an interesting definition and I’ll quote here: “Religiosity" is a term used to refer to excessive involvement in religion or religious activity. Such involvement goes beyond the norm for a person of similar faith and is often driven more by individual beliefs than the content of the actual religion. Though a bit different, legalism is somewhat akin to religiosity. Both Christians and non-Christians use the term "religiosity" to refer to those who have replaced their God with their religion. In Christianity, religiosity occurs when people focus on church activity, rules (which often go beyond actual biblical commands), tradition, and pet doctrines rather than on relationship with God.” Every time a person asked me if I am a religious person, I would say no. Although I go to church religiously (Like a habit), but I am not religious. I don’t have the religiosity in me.  I understand that religiosity enslaves a person. And that is not what Christianity is about. It is about freedom. I go to church because I like going, not because I have to, or because I’m afraid of some kind of punishment or anything. Why am I talking about religiosity? Because I read today in 1 Samuel 15, God sent king Saul on a mission. Saul was supposed to destroy everything about the Amalekites; he was told to not spare a thing. He didn’t do it properly. He thought he could spare some of the good sheep, oxen, calves to sacrifice to the LORD, even the LORD had said to him that he had to destroy everything, men and women, and animals; do not spare anything. Then Samuel went to talk to Saul: “What have you done? Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” What was Samuel talking about? He was saying that obey the Word of the LORD was better than religiosity, following the law. It took me a while to understand when people used to say: “better obey than sacrifice” without a context. But the context means that it is better you do what God says than be a blind religious person. Or worse, you can fool yourself thinking that only by going to church every Sunday and even reading your bible religiously you are saved. But if you do like an obligation and not because you love doing it, it is just a mere sacrifice. And you are not pleasing God. Some people go further in their religiosity.  Saul thought that if he pleased the people because he was the king and he was seeking the people’s approval, and not God’s approval, he would be successful and would please God. But he was wrong. I get that we all want to be loved and admired by the people, but this can’t be the most important thing in life. What is the takeaway of Saul’s acts?  We shouldn’t be worried about pleasing people, or to be praised by people. We should do things joyfully to please God, and the rest will come in the right time in the right amount. Religiosity was the excuse that Saul used to justify his acts, his pride, but he messed up, God wasn’t expecting sacrifices, God was expecting obedience. God expects it from all of us. Yes, we obey human laws, and we also must obey God’s law. More important than those both are God’s words. The difference is sometimes, God can speak to us directly and you better recognize His voice and obey it, or there will be consequences. Example: if you are about to do something, and somehow you feel that you shouldn’t, it might be God preventing you from doing something that can probably save your skin. Don’t be a man-pleaser, be a God-pleaser. Think about a situation in your life that you have chosen to do something just to please somebody, and you knew it wasn’t quite right according to the Bible, but you did it anyway just to look good. Do you regret it? Was there any consequence? Remember, to obey is better than sacrifice.

Eu dei uma olhada na internet o significado de religiosidade. Do dicionário de Cambridge diz, “religiosidade significa – a qualidade de ser muito religiosos, ou lembra você de um comportamento religiosos, frequentemente de uma forma irritante.” (link). Eu achei em outro site (link) uma definição interessante, eu vou citar aqui: “Religiosidade é um termo usado para se referir ao excessivo envolvimento na religião, ou em atividades religiosas. Esse envolvimento vai além de uma norma para uma pessoa com uma fé normal, é impulsionada por uma crença individual do que pelo o conteúdo da religião atual. Embora seja um pouco diferente, legalismo é de alguma forma parecido a religiosidade. Ambos cristãos e não-cristãos usam o termo “religiosidade” para se referir aqueles que tem substituído seu Deus pela religião. No cristianismo, a religiosidade acontece quando pessoas focam na atividade da igreja, regras (o que geralmente vai além das questões bíblicas), tradições, e doutrinas vãs do que em um relacionamento com Deus.” Toda vez que uma pessoa me pergunta se eu sou uma pessoa religiosa, eu respondo que não. Embora eu vá a igreja religiosamente (como um hábito), mas não sou religiosa. Eu não tenho a religiosidade em mim. Eu entendo que a religiosidade escraviza a pessoa. E isso não tem nada a ver com cristianismo. Cristianismo tem a ver com liberdade. Eu vou a igreja porque eu gosto, e não porque eu tenho que, ou porque eu tenho medo de algum tipo de punição. Por que eu estou falando de religiosidade? Porque, eu li hoje em 1 Samuel 15, Deus enviou o rei Saul numa missão. Saul deveria ter destruído tudo sobre os amalekitas; ele não deveria poupar nada. Ele não fez sua missão apropriadamente. Ele pensou que ele poderia poupar algumas ovelhas, bois e bezerros para sacrificar ao Senhor, mesmo quando o próprio Senhor o havia dito que ele deveria destruir tudo (homens, mulheres, animais); não poupar nada. Então Samuel foi falar com ele: O que você fez? “Acaso tem o Senhor tanto prazer em holocaustos e em sacrifícios quanto em que se obedeça à sua palavra? A obediência é melhor do que o sacrifício...” O que Samuel estava falando? Ele estava dizendo que obedecer a Palavra de Deus era melhor do que religiosidade, seguindo a lei. Demorei um pouco para entender quando as pessoas me diziam “melhor obedecer do que sacrificar” sem contexto. Mas, o contexto significa que é melhor você fazer o que Deus diz, do que ser uma pessoa religiosa cega. Ou pior, você pode se enganar em pensar que apenas porque você vai para igreja todo domingo e ler sua bíblia religiosamente você é salvo. Mas, se você faz como uma obrigação e não porque você gosta e sente prazer em fazer, então isso se torna um mero sacrifício. E não está agradando a Deus. Algumas pessoas vão além na sua religiosidade. Saul pensou que ao agradar as pessoas porque ele era o rei, e ele estava buscando a aprovação das pessoas, ele seria bem-sucedido, e consequentemente ele agradaria a Deus. Mas ele estava errado. Eu entendo que todos nós em algum nível nós queremos ser amados e admirados pelas pessoas, mas isso não pode ser a coisa mais importante na vida. Qual é a lição que tiramos dos atos de Saul? Nós não devemos nos preocupar em agradar as pessoas, ou ser aceito e louvado pelas pessoas. Nós devemos fazer as coisas alegremente para agradar a Deus, e o resto virá na hora certa e na quantidade certa. Religiosidade foi a desculpa que Saul usou para justificar seus atos, seu orgulho, e ele errou, Deus não estava esperando sacrifícios, Deus estava esperando obediência. Deus espera de todos nós obediência. Sim, nós obedecemos as leis humanas, e nós devemos obedecer a lei de Deus. Mais importante que essas duas coisas é a Palavra de Deus. A diferença é que às vezes, Deus pode falar conosco diretamente e é melhor que você reconheça a voz Dele, ou haverá consequências. Por exemplo: se você está prestes para fazer algo, e de alguma forma você sente que não deve fazer, isso bem pode ser Deus prevenindo você de fazer algo, e isso pode salvar sua pele. Não seja uma pessoa que vive para agradar os outros, seja uma pessoa que vive para agradar a Deus. Pense em alguma situação na sua vida que você escolheu fazer algo apenas para agradar alguém, e que você sabia que não está bem de acordo com a bíblia, mas você fez mesmo assim, só para parece bonito. Você se arrependeu? Houve consequência? Se lembre, melhor obedecer do que sacrificar.
