Come As you are // Venha Como você está

This isn't a Christian song, but it serves the purpose.

You might have heard something like this, “it is not what comes at you that matters, but how you decide to react to it that matters”. That makes you a good or bad person; an educated and polite or a rude one; a Christian one or a non-believer.

We Christians should be always very watchful on how we act and react. Yes, sometimes we slip in our reactions, we may fall on our old nature and act the way we are no longer proud. When we don’t have the strength of the Holy Spirit in us, we fall on that more often; it is almost like we can’t control ourselves. Some people can control themselves making a tremendous effort, and it is a struggle all the time. Some people just want to be good people on their own merits. But I tell you what, it doesn’t matter to God if you get to be a good person by human law and your own efforts if you don’t believe in Christ.  Because sooner or later you will fall, and the fall will be bad. Sorry to say that. When we have Christ in us, we don’t need to be so severe on ourselves, because our old nature doesn’t rule over us anymore. We are free, and Christ helps us to get through all the situations with minimum effort. Christ is the one who strengthens us. Christ’s nature becomes our nature. We are at peace, we can rest knowing that Christ is for us and in us, and through us, He works.

Does that happen immediately? No, it doesn’t. But it is no longer impossible. That’s why Paul preferred having Christ more than anything else in the world. He knew the value of having Christ as the LORD of his life. Instead of being worried about controlling himself, he gave all the control to Jesus, by faith. We will suffer in this life; Jesus suffered in his life on earth, why wouldn’t we? But as He won the battles, we will also win the battles.

Jesus had been through the same pain we have been. Jesus lost loved one, he was betrayed, he was humiliated, they attacked him all the time, they doubted him; so Jesus knows your sufferings, your struggles; he knows your heart. And you know His reactions, don’t you want to react as He did? Don’t you want to have the strength that he had? I certainly do.

Can you imagine bearing that person from your work without flinching an eye? Or better, talking to that person with love and getting to know him better and understand why he is such a pain? Maybe you would be able to help that person to be a better person! Or can you imagine being able to forgive that friend that betrayed you?  Or even being able to control yourself into not buying more stuff that you don’t need?

When you decide to follow Jesus you may consider this: you probably will lose a bunch of things; but if you don’t give up, you will see that those things weren’t important enough; when you have Christ and the Holy Spirit with you, you will feel peace, the kind of peace that it is hard to explain. All that if only when you decide to believe. Nothing else is required. No circumcision is needed.

As Kurt Cobain used to sing – Come as you are. Jesus is ready to embrace you, help you, nurture you in His amazing grace and love.

8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3: 8 - 11, 13 - 14.

Filipenses 3: 8 - 11; 13 - 14.

Choose to be full of...// Escolha ser cheio de...

Can you choose to be   Joyful? (Full of joy) Peaceful? (full of peace) Patient? (full of patience) Kind? (full of kindness) Good? (full of goodness) Faithful? (full of faith) Gentle? (full of gentleness) Generous? (full of generosity) Self-controlled? (totally self-controlled) Can you choose to be like that all the time? To everyone?   What other religion would promise you that? I am not saying that all Christians are like that all the time. No, we are not, unfortunately. However, we are prone to be more successful than others, do you know why?  When Jesus was lifted to the heavens after his resurrection, he promised that a few days later, His Spirit would come to live in us. The Holy Spirit is our helper. When we live a godly life, a prayer life, and are filled with the Holy Spirit, those are the characteristics that should be seen in us—if not all of them, at least most of them.  Would you like to live like that? To treat people like that? Well, I suppose so. ...

My take on these stories // Minha opinião nessas histórias

The 2 Samuel 9 and 10 are about David’s kindness toward others. One person received his kindness humbly, knowing that wasn’t expected from that king in particular. Saul was the first king of Israel and did not obey the word of the LORD. Therefore, the kingdom was taken away from him and his lineage. God announced to Saul that he was going to give the kingdom to someone else. Being David. Because David was not a descendant of Saul, once he started reigning, it was expected that the new king, non-descendant of the former, would kill all the former king’s descendants so no one would stand in the line of succession. Bu David did not do that. Instead, he chose to show kindness toward the last person from Saul’s house.  Saul’s grandson accepted David’s kindness. And we have a beautiful story about grace.  Chapter 10, however, tells a different story. A story of a man who didn’t accept David’s kindness because that was what he was. A person who suspected everyone around him. He ...

Arise and eat // Levante e coma

He came to a broom bush, sat under it, and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough,  Lord ,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”   5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once, an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”   6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the  Lord  came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”   8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. (1 Kings 19: 4-8) How many times have you wished that this life were over? I have wished that many times. Sometimes it is just too painful, or sad, or hopeless, isn’t it? You know, Elijah...
