To die to live // Morrer para viver

You know that for a seed to sprout it need to die first. With that in mind, you’ll be able to understand what it means when people in church say that we share the death of Christ and His body. Many times, in the New Testament, Jesus, as well as Paul, speaks about seeds, death, and body (John 12: 24 – 26).

Imagine that you are a plant. But, no one is good on this earth. Consequently, you are not a good plant, and your fruits are not good either. When we don’t let Jesus change our lives, when we reject His truths, we will keep being a bad plant, which gives bad fruit. What are those bad fruits?
They are lies that we tell, they are bad behaviors that we can’t quite control, they are our addiction that we can’t get rid of, they are the envy, hate, unforgiveness, lack of mercy, selfishness, the sexual immorality, the gossips, and so many other behaviors that out there (out of the Christian living, people know they are bad, but they don’t care – they accept as “it is what it is”).

When we let Jesus move into our lives, that means that we believe in all the things He’s done, we are going to start a process of dying. We are going to let our old nature, that bad plant, die. So, we are going to let Jesus takes over the process of transformation. We’re going to have a new life and we are going to be a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17 – 21), a new plant.

So, we had to die, so we could live again.

Or we can also think about the other example given by Jesus. Jesus said he was the vine, the true vine, the good vine. We are not a good one. But if we decide to accept Jesus as the one who provides life to us, so our branch is going to be inserted in the true vine’s trunk, who is Jesus (John 15: 1 – 17). And you as a branch will bear fruit, in this case, good fruit. Since you are no longer alone, you are part of a new plant, a good plant that is Jesus. You had to detach from the old nature, then be inserted into the new trunk and then sprout something new. You will have the strength to fight your old nature, and you will win every battle because you won’t be alone.

Jesus had to die to He could ascend to heavens and let the Holy Spirit here. The Holy Spirit is His Spirit that comes to live within us when we believe in Jesus. Before the ascension of Christ, the Holy Spirit wasn’t present in everyone who believed, only on some people who God had chosen. But now, we have Him with us. We share Christ's death because if we want to go to heaven we also need to die. To let our old nature behind. And let the Holy Spirit in.

We are also part of Jesus body, as many times is also called the church. The church is the body of Christ. How? Well, we are part of the true vine, who is Jesus, through Jesus we are a new person, who gives good fruits, we are kind of “attached” to Jesus. In the Bible says Jesus is the head of the body, the head commands the body. If we let Him, He will lead us through our life. The church which is not the building of any denomination, but the spiritual community of people who believe in Jesus and together Praise the Lord, and walk-in harmony with one another, because in a body cannot have a disagreement, otherwise it can’t move either forward or backward. The body of Christ is the Church, the celestial church. And we start making part of it once we are attached to Jesus.

Now, all that because I wanted to tell you these verses from Colossians 3: 1 – 15.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all and is in all.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful

Who would you rather be?

E sejam agradecidos.

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...
