You shut the door // Você fechou a porta

The LORD said to Jeremiah, ‘16 And I will declare my judgments against them, for all their evil in forsaking me. They have made offerings to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands.’ (Jeremiah 1:16)

It is very concerning for us who follow the LORD and His commands because idolatry is a constant subject in the Bible. We are used to thinking only about idols being an image made of wood or stone or any other material you can think of when in reality it is not that. God is constantly reminding us that idols are those things that make us forsake Him.

In this verse that I chose today, it is clear two things for me: 1 – we are the ones who forsake, abandon God. Not Him. He will never abandon us. He is faithful. 2. The idols are things made by our own hands. What do we do? We work, right? Sometimes we give too much credit for our work. “I did that”, “I made those”, “I worked hard for that”. We put too much effort into a job or work that we have or do, and in doing that we are making less and less time to the one who is responsible for our whole being!

So, we forsake God, and the work of our own hands are the things that lead us to destruction, our own destruction. God had been tolerating, patiently for years, hundreds of years the rebellious ways of His people. He sent messenger after messenger up to a point that “enough is enough”, and something must be done. That might not be our case here. We as an individual, don’t have hundreds of years of life to test God’s patience. Jeremiah was talking to a people, the people of Judah and several prophets had come before him. God sends us messengers to warn us about the danger of our ways. We choose not to give an ear or to shut it off.

You are totally allowed to love your job, your work; but remember who gave you that? Who gave you the knowledge, the intelligence, the food, the house, everything you have? He gives and He takes away. He demands our fidelity, our loyalty, our reverence, and devotion to Him: the Creator.

Jeremiah in chapter 2:2 – 3 reminds Judah how devoted she was at the beginning of the relationship with God. As anyone when start dating finds everything beautiful, they are full of love and dedication. After some time, each one takes the other for granted; they think they deserve what they have and nothing is never gonna change. Big mistake.

The LORD reminds us that it is not supposed to be this way. The LORD is faithful, as in any relationship it doesn’t depend on one part only. God is faithful and has all the attention to you. Are you doing your part in this relationship?

Remember – God is not the one who leaves; we are the ones who shut the door behind us. And our own choices are the ones that lead us to our own destruction.

The good news is: He is good, faithful, merciful and are always willing to forgive. So, if you are in the position where you closed the door behind you long ago or not so long ago, just turn to Him. Remember the beginning, the love, and blessings. When you used to trust in Him with all your strength, and you had peace. Now, that you tried to do everything in your own way, you cannot rest, you are always worried. Just turn to God, He will not reject you, He will embrace you.

Disse o SENHOR a Jeremias: ‘Pronunciarei a minha sentença contra o meu povo por todas as suas maldades; porque me abandonaram, queimaram incenso a outros deuses, e adoraram deuses que as suas mãos fizeram.' (Jeremias 1:16)

I see Grace in the time of the Law // Eu vejo Graça no tempo da Lei

People frequently say that the Old Testament is the time of the law, and now we are under the Grace of God. Surprisingly, I just found out an explicit act of the Grace of God in the Old Testament. As I read chapter 9 of Deuteronomy , in which has a title Not because of Righteousness (ESV). I am stunned to see verses 4 - 6, they say: “ Do not say in your heart , after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘ It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. 5 Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.6 “Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving y...

How to Recognize Foolishness and Pursue Wisdom A devotional reflection on humility, discernment, and the cost of our choices Opening Scripture “Do not be wise in your own eyes.” — Proverbs 3:7 Devotional Reading A fool is not the same as an insane person. In my understanding, an insane person is unable to reason clearly; things may not make sense in their mind. A fool, however, is someone who rejects counsel, ignores warnings, disobeys what is right, and acts from wrong motivations. If a person does the wrong thing for the right reason, we may still be able to understand the motive. But foolishness is different: it is often rooted in ignorance, arrogance, and a narrow mind that refuses wisdom. How can we recognize a wise person? In my understanding, a wise person does not act impulsively. This person does not need to suffer through every mistake in order to learn, because wisdom can also come from observing the experiences of ot...

Doubts and fears leave us halfway // Dúvidas e medos nos deixam na metade do caminho

Despite all the sad news I got this week, we are still standing. I am in the Book of Joshua, in my annual Bible reading. There is a part in the book that is kind of boring. It is the distribution of the cities and borders. It is tempting to skip this part, but something that I heard from the guy from the Bible Project usually says, “it is wisdom literature”, or “meditation literature”. There is something important besides geographical information in these texts. And there is. Joshua 17:18c “though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out”. In the beginning of the book and several other parts too, the LORD says to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous”. What does that mean? What is this book really about? Well, the way I see it might not be the same way you see it. The way I see this book is about how we trust God and obey Him. Then we will see Him doing amazing things. It doesn’t matter how n...
