Are you a good listener? // Você é um bom ouvinte?

Are you a good listener? How about a good doer? None? I was reading Deuteronomy chapter 7 and 8 today and two things caught my eyes. First thing was 7:12 where it says, ‘“And because you listen to these rules and keep and do them, the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers. English Standard Version (ESV) – I put the bold.

How many times we don’t take the time to listen, and I’ll say no more. Because if we don’t listen the rest of it won’t be done. It is crucial to understand and receive the blessings God has prepared for us that we listen, we keep and do the commandments. I am not saying that everybody should be a Jew now and follow the Law. I am saying that most in life we should take the time to listen before speaking. Listen before jumping to any conclusion; listen.

To keep something is because you care about it, so you keep it. To keep what God has told you is important; it is a demonstration of your love and care for God’s words. So, keep them in a safe place, like your heart. Jesus said, ‘But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!’ Luke 11:28.

To do them is to practice them. James 1:22 says, ‘But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.’ Let’s say you just started driving. You studied the traffic laws, you must do them in order not to lose your registration or get a fine, right? Why are we so sloppy with God’s words?  We assume that we already know all of it. But, between knowing and doing there is a big gap there. We should know that when we don’t obey Him, we are kindling his anger (Deuteronomy 8:19-20).

The second part that caught my eyes was: ‘And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4 Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you. 6 So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.’ Deuteronomy 8:2 -6

That is huge. So, we complained about the trials we might be going through and probably with no clue why God is allowing that. Because we are so full of ourselves, thinking so highly of ourselves. And God put you in a position that humbles you. Man, you have to realize that God is shaping you to His purposes. He is not punishing you; He loves you because He sees something else and wants you to prosper, but for that, you need to know who is in control, and how you will accomplish what he wants it. You need to be humbled, you need to come closer to Him. How fast the season goes? I believe that depends on how fast you notice that and start acting the way He wants you to. The faster you humble and put Him first the faster the next season will start.

A seed to grow it must die first. You must kill your old self and become a new one so you can spring up flowers and fruits. To an old vase become new it has to be broken, pressed, shaped and go to the fire. Then it will become a new good vase to be used.

Let’s pray: Lord, I want to be a good listener, a good keeper, and a good doer. I want to know your plans, show me which area in me I need to change. I accept your discipline, shape me for your purpose. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...
