Integrity // Integridade

We are generally tempted by pride and wealth. I remember when I was in school, like high school and even before, I was a little bit proud of myself because I didn’t need to study too hard to go well in the exams. And some people liked taking advantage of me because I didn’t care about helping them to cheat. In my mind I wasn’t doing anything wrong “I wasn’t the one cheating!” (I used to say). However, I was helping them to cheat, in some degree back in my mind I knew I wasn’t really helping them at all. I was just trying to keep my status of the intelligent one.

When I got to University, I changed. Instead of giving them everything ready, I invited myself to help them to understand the subject, and that would help me also. So we had this study group. I think I did better. My pride wasn’t too big especially because I realized that was few people smarter than me, or at least I thought so. And there was this one girl, she is very dear to me she also had a study group, luckily I have never been a competitive one. So, the study group was a win-win, for me and for the girls who came to study with me, they learned to thrive for themselves.

Proverbs 11 talks about integrity; we sons of God, redeemed and saved, we are to reject pride and welcome humility, we are to reject dishonesty and welcome honesty, we are to reject wicked thoughts and embrace righteousness. Because with humility comes wisdom, and the righteous are delivered from death.

This character traces don’t come easily. It will come when you and I recognize our flaws before God from the deepest part of our hearts and mind, and when we repent and let the way free for changes, so God can do His job in our characters. This is hard, hard-core stuff.

Let’s pray: Lord, help me to identify the parts in my character that lead me away from you. If there is any pride, please take control of it, if there are any wicked thoughts, please take control over it, when I tend to be dishonest in the minimum thing show me that I’m not doing great before your eyes. Help me Lord, give me the sensibility to realize these flaws in my character, don’t let them take over me. You, Lord, take over of my character, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Proverbs 11: 1 - 9
1 The LORD detests dishonest scales,
but accurate weights find favor with him.
2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
    but with humility comes wisdom.
3 The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.
4 Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath,
    but righteousness delivers from death.
5 The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.
6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.
7 Hopes placed in mortals die with them;
all the promise of[a] their power comes to nothing.
8 The righteous person is rescued from trouble,
and it falls on the wicked instead.
9 With their mouths, the godless destroy their neighbors, but through knowledge the righteous escape.

Vamos orar: Senhor, ajuda-me a identificar as partes do meu caráter que me afastam de você.

7 Quando morre o ímpio, sua esperança perece;

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...
