Ash Wednesday // Quarta-feira de cinzas

Ash Wednesday. It is today. How was your party? Did you party safely? Did you do everything you wanted? Do you feel satisfied?  How do you feel? Did it feel good with all the drinking and all the sinning? Everything went how you had planned? But, answer to yourself, do you really feel happy?

Well, it shouldn’t be this way. Ash Wednesday isn’t about cleaning yourself up after the carnival. Ash Wednesday is about preparing yourself for the death and resurrection of Jesus, known as Easter or Passover (when the Lord’s angel passed over the Jews and killed the firstborns in Egypt). Easter isn’t about fertility goddess with eggs and sex.

In western Christian world this time of year, Ash Wednesday mark the first day of Lent, 6 ½ weeks before Easter. But why ashes?

Ashes in the bible have meanings:
Ashes: The ashes on the altar of burnt offering were gathered into a cavity in its surface. The ashes of a red heifer burnt entire, according to regulations prescribed in Numb. 19, had the ceremonial efficacy of purifying the unclean, (Hebrews 9:13) but of polluting the clean. [SACRIFICE] Ashes about the person, especially on the head, were used as a sign of sorrow. [MOURNING]
ATS Bible Dictionary
Ashes: To repent in sackcloth and ashes, or to lie down among ashes, was an external sign of self-affliction for sin, or of grief under misfortune. We find it adopted by Job, Job 2:8; by many Jews when in great fear, Esther 4:3; and by the king of Nineveh, Jonah 3:6. The ashes of a red heifer were used in ceremonial purification, Numbers 19:1-22.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
The ashes of a red heifer burned entire (Numbers 19:5) when sprinkled on the unclean made them ceremonially clean (Hebrews 9:13). To cover the head with ashes was a token of self-abhorrence and humiliation (2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:3; Jeremiah 6:26, etc.). To feed on ashes (Isaiah 44:20) means to seek that which will prove to be vain and unsatisfactory, and hence it denotes the unsatisfactory nature of idol-worship. (Hosea 12:1).

I had never taken the time before to try to understand this day. It is not in the bible as a day to observe, but it is interesting to look at it in remembrance of what happened with Jesus, and what that means to you. If it means something.

Paul admonishes us in Romans 6:1 – 7 (you can keep reading the whole chapter)
1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

It shouldn’t be this way, you go to the party and then come back to “repent” (but you didn’t) when every year you do the same. You realize if you do this every year, you are still a slave of sin? You haven’t been set free. The sin is still guiding your paths.

Lent is about death, Jesus death, your death to the sin. Your decision to be set free. Your decision to turn from your old ways. If you don’t recognize your old ways as sinful, what can I say? You only know that you broke the law if you know the law. Otherwise, in your head, you haven’t done anything wrong.

But I believe deep inside, you know the difference between right and wrong. Take this day to put your life on the table and think about what you want to do with it and what you expect after it.

Let’s pray: Dear heavenly Father, I know You have sent Your only Son to die for me as a sacrificial Lamb who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). I believe in His sacrifice, I believe that He resurrected from the dead after 3 days. Help me during this season to put my life in order so your name may be glorified in it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...
