Escandalous Grace // Graça escandalosa

Have you ever gone mad because someone acted so graceful to another that didn't deserve?

Have you come across to Jonah’s story? The one who refused to do his job, the job God had appointed him to do? (You can’t run away from that, for sure). The one who ended up in a belly’s fish? This part everyone knows it.

But, if you never opened your bible to read chapter 4 of Jonah, you will find out something amazing about God’s character, not about Jonah nor about Nineveh.

First, Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh. Do you know why? “He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.” So, Jonah was angry with God because he knew God’s heart, and if the people of Nineveh repent God wouldn’t destroy them, and his words would be a waste. I think that was what he thought. He wanted God to destroy Nineveh no matter what people did.

Later, in the same chapter, God was still worried about Jonah, who was having a hard time to accept God’s decision of not destroying Nineveh; Jonah went someplace to see what would happen to the city. Do you know what God did? (v.6) “Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant[a] and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant”; God, so thoughtful! God was about to give him a very cute lesson about compassion. (v.7) “But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered.”

How do you think Jonah felt about what happened to the plant? (v.8 – 9) “When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.” 9 But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” “It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”  How spoiled kid Jonah sounded like? I wanna dieeee! You killed a plant!!! Now, there is nothing to ease this scorching sun over my head! Buaaaaa Buaaa!

Sometimes, people care more about a plant than a person! Sometimes, we just don’t see the point, right? We flood our heads with why’s and blind our eyes to see the point.

What God was trying to say about Himself (v.10) “But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?””

See? How compassionate and just is God? He saw within Nineveh people’s hearts. Those people really believed in Jonah’s message, and they didn’t want to be destroyed. They repented.

Sometimes, people need a very strong word to change, or something very near death to comprehend that God is love and doesn’t want to destroy. God loves people. His intentions are restoration and redemption, not destruction. He paid the price, why people don’t want to do anything in exchange?

Repent and love Him above all and love your neighbors. Not easy at all, but it is worth eternal life. You can think that you are a good person. I’m sure you are in our own understanding, but in God’s eyes, we need to confess that He is the Lord, that He came and died on that cross and came up from the dead to grant me eternal life. That’s it.

Ela surgiu durante a noite e morreu durante a noite.

Deus ama as pessoas.

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...
