According to my lifestyle // De acordo com meu estilo de vida

We all know the parable of the Good Samaritan. We have heard a lot about it. How is important to feel compassion and act compassionately. We already know who our neighbors are.  They are everyone. We need to care for everyone who crosses our way. But what I want to highlight here today is on who made Jesus tells us about the good Samaritan in the first place.

Jesus made a question (ESV): “He said to him: What is written in the law? How do you read it?”
Two questions. One is about if the lawyer knew the Law (it is supposed that yes, he should know it), and how he had been interpreting it.

Sometimes, we read and read the bible and we think we get it. Do we really? Or we are adapting the meaning to feel more comfortable? Like the man in verse 29: “But he, to justify himself said: Who is my neighbor?” Have you done it? You choose a part of the Bible, out of context, to justify yourself? I am sure you have. Who hasn’t?
At least once in life, we all have done it, intentionally or unintentionally, but yes, we have done it.  Sooner or later we will notice what we have done, we will listen to God rebuking us, or we will hear some pastor preaching something about it and we realize how we misused the passage.

It was comfortable to the man assume that his neighbors were only people he knew, even those who lived just beside him. By the way, do you know your neighbor next door? (Shame on me I know only two or three people who live in the same building).

Jesus chose a Samaritan, a public enemy of the Jews in that time, an unknown person who helped another unknown person in need. Don’t narrow or broaden the meaning of the Scriptures just to fit in your lifestyle.

We are called “to be renewed in the spirit of our minds and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness” like Paul said to the Ephesians (4:17 - 24).
“17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.. Ephesians 4:17 – 24.

We are called to stand up and act differently, to oppose the common. We are to be recognized as followers of Christ, by being like Him.

Let’s pray: Dear heavenly Father help me every time I attempt to manipulate the Scripture according to my lifestyle to justify myself. I need to be renewed every day in your mercy and compassion. Fill me with your Spirit. Give me wisdom. I want to be salt and light. In Jesus name, I pray, Amen.

Dá-me sabedoria. Eu quero ser sal e luz. Em nome de Jesus, eu oro, amém.

  1. The followers of Christ were recognized because of the way they loved. As Christians it is a challenge and also a command to love everyone, no exception, be compassionate, suffer with the one that is suffering, avoid looking with prejudge (the most difficult part for me) and simply love.

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe...

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost...

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the ...
