Trust // Confiar

I’m going to start today backward in history. In Matthew 18:3 Jesus said, “Truly I tell you unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven”. I remember this verse when I was praying this morning, and a vivid image came to mind. It was a little kid hugging in fear the legs of his father. The kid was afraid of a storm, or something.

I thought this is what Jesus meant by saying “become like a little child”. What does a child do when he is afraid? He runs to his father or mother to feel safe. We all have done this. We ran to our parents when we were afraid of something, and immediately the fear is gone. So, if we don’t act like this child, and run to our father, who is in heaven, asking him for help and security, we won’t enter the kingdom of heaven.

Wait for the link with the next part.

Israel, after Moses’ death, was ready to take possession of the promised land. Who was their leader now? Joshua. They had to cross the Jordan river, which by that time it was in the time of harvest, which means with its “tide” high, as the Bible says – overflowing. God explained to Joshua how it was supposed to be, and what they should do. (Joshua 3)

If you remember, when the people were to cross the Red Sea they were complaining, and I am not quite sure if they really wanted to have left Egypt. Anyway, the point is, this time they weren’t complaining (they knew the drill); they were more familiarized with their God, and they were marching to war.  Maybe, they might have reasoned a little and concluded they might obey just the way God says, otherwise, they might lose the opportunity to possess the land they so much waited for.

So, I learn that they were more mature this time. They learn how to obey the Lord. Just like we learn to obey our parents and all kinds of law that we encounter in life. When we mature we become an abiding citizen. Although we were first a kid who ran to our parents when we were afraid, it doesn’t mean that when we are more mature, we have no fear. We do, but we act like adults now.

When we are kids, we are more rebelled, and when we are adults, we tend to trust in ourselves to solve our problems. But, what the Bible is teaching us is: we have always to run to our Father in heaven when something is about to happen that frighten us, and we have to act like Israel in that time, they obey the Lord to win the war they were about to go. Trust is the key here.

Two important actions must be taken in time of fear. First, we have to go to our Father and search for guidance; and second, we obey what He said. Because when the war is coming, it is better to trust in the Lord of the Armies. He knows how to fight. He will instruct us what to do. Don’t be afraid, kid. Be strong and Courageous. Because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Lord, help me to be like a child who runs to his father when he is afraid; and build in me the trust that Israel had before they take possession of the promised land. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A chave aqui é Confiar.

I see Grace in the time of the Law // Eu vejo Graça no tempo da Lei

People frequently say that the Old Testament is the time of the law, and now we are under the Grace of God. Surprisingly, I just found out an explicit act of the Grace of God in the Old Testament. As I read chapter 9 of Deuteronomy , in which has a title Not because of Righteousness (ESV). I am stunned to see verses 4 - 6, they say: “ Do not say in your heart , after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘ It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. 5 Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.6 “Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving y...

The oppressive urge to speak // A necessidade opressiva de falar

Should I keep quiet forever? Is silence that bad? Can’t I stand my own thoughts that I need to say out loud? What kind of thoughts come to my mind? Are they generally good or bad? If I choose to speak up, to whom would it benefit? If anyone ever. Let me be clear: It is better not to say a word than say words that will do more harm than good. What if it is the truth? I ask, why would you say it? How would you say it? The truth will come out eventually. You don’t need to lie or be rude. What we must do is to be kind. If I tell you the truth in a harsh way, will you accept, or will you only hear the harsh sound of my voice and ignore completely what I was trying to say? Sometimes, not even the kindest words won’t make it through because the listener isn’t listening at all. The listener doesn’t care about your opinion, doesn’t care about others. The listener just cares about himself. The listener just wants to say w...

No "trouble-free" card for you // Nenhum cartão "livre-de-problemas" para você

The Word of the Lord is beautiful and true. In there, you find so many poems. This is the form the Bible authors chose to communicate the Word of the LORD, and it is profound. I’ve been listening to the Bible Project podcast for more than a year now. Lately, they are covering the theme of “The Wilderness”. Now, everywhere I read in the Scripture, I see something related to it. It is amazing. I am now in the book of the prophet Isaiah, chapter 43. And guess what? It is wonderful. Just in the first few verses, you find that God is telling His people that it doesn’t matter what sort of hardship they are going through, He, the Creator, will deliver them. Actually, it is said like this: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior....
