Manner of life // Maneira de viver

“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so whether  I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened  in anything by your opponents” Philippians 1: 27 – 28.

It is interesting when you have the habit of reading the Bible, and you know you have already read this passage so many times, and suddenly, you realize something new. Something new strikes your head and you are amazed! That is why the Bible is alive. Every day you read, no matter how many times you have read, you’ll find something new.

So, how is your manner of life? How are you doing? Is it worth? Is it worthy of what? Paul counsels us to have a manner of life worthy of the gospel. What does he mean by that? In my understanding, he is making you analyze if the way you are living it is the way Jesus has taught us because Jesus teachings are the gospel. His life and all the things He taught us is the gospel. They are the so-called Good News.

If you really want to analyze your life, you better start little by little, day by day, in every aspect. Maybe you should make that question that some time ago was famous – What would Jesus do? – You know, sometimes we act without thinking, sometimes we do things by the force of habit, sometimes we don’t care, or we care too much about something that it is not worthy. The sermon on the mount is a good start because at that moment Jesus is setting the parameters, the boundaries. He is indicating the way and the will of God. Do people often ask, what is the will of God? Oh, you don’t know? It is there, in the sermon on the mount, all of God wants from us. God is not going to choose for you anything, if you do what is said to us in the Bible out of love, with faith, we are already doing His will. All the rest will be added.

Your manner of life should be worthy of the gospel, so in life, you will stand firm when you face any adversity; because you will have faith and people beside you to cheer you up. And all your opponents will fall down, flat in the face.

Later on, in this letter, Paul gives us some tips, in case we have forgotten. “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (2:3) Man! This is hard, especially for those who hold high positions, or has some authority over others. If you do, you should be praying on this every day, so you can do your job properly, and yet living a godly life worthy of the gospel of Christ. “Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others” (2:4); we are living in a very self-centered world. However, for example, as everyone should know by now, climate changes won’t affect only one class of people, but everyone without discrimination. So, you better learn how to worry about the other (a.k.a. the planet and everything who lives in it), and not only worry about your own comfort.

So, your manner of life is worth living? Are you living the gospel? Do you care about others or you have enough problem of your own to care about anything or anybody else? The first commandment was Love your God above everything else, and the second was to love your neighbor as yourself. All the rest come if only you follow these two.

Vale a pena?

Come and See + Judge correctly // Venha e Veja + Julgue corretamente

Venha e Veja   Two verses stood out for me this morning. John 7:17-18 and 7:24.   “ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.   18  Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” John 7:24 “ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”   That was Jesus talking.  I lately heard that some people with vast knowledge of the Bible (we all want to believe) are being led astray through the vain doctrines of this world. Meaning, that some church leaders or people have earned the people's trust by telling them lies about the teachings of the Bible. People seek their own popularity by agreeing with the lies the world has offered them.  I have seen churches with flags and teaching doctrines that the Bible condemns. They have twisted the Word of God to be more acceptable and palatab

Are you lost? // Você está perdido?

Você está perdido? There is always this time in life when we are certain about what to do with our lives. We have a goal, and an objective to reach. However, it is often that life turns the other way around and our plans are made nothing. Frequently I hear people say, “I am lost, I don’t know what to do!” That happens when we put our goals into something that changes. Everything in this world change. You and I are changing by the minute. My thoughts right now are running like crazy, and if I don’t set a goal in something that doesn’t change, I can’t do anything. What is it?   Jesus. The word of God. You might think I am crazy, and lunatic or even a fanatic. But who really knows me, know that I am none of those things. I am a very sensible person who has lived and experienced many things. And I don’t lie. So, if you are experiencing a sense of loss and despair, how about putting your hope in the One who cannot change whatsoever. If you lost you

Pointing finger // Apontar o dedo

Recently I was studying the Sermon on the mount in a bible study at the church. It was wonderful to meditate and go deep in these Jesus’ words. So many details we sometimes don’t realize. We are very quick to see the flaws and failures of others. But interestingly the things we see faster in others are probably the things we don’t see or won’t see in ourselves. It is easy to point a finger when someone is, for example, throwing trash on the streets, when one doesn’t even bother to do the same at home. In Brazil, we have this saying “blacksmith’s house, woodpecker.” Who are you to point a finger to anyone when you yourself cannot do better? Your sin is no smaller than his. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matthew 7 :3). Look, sawdust is something small, and plank or log is something much bigger than sawdust. Sometimes we are able to see something very insignificant in othe
